Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Sixteenth, the Queen's, Light Dragoons (Lancers): 1912 to 1925 At the request of the Officers of the Regiment I have in this volume brought down the History of the 16th Lancers from 1912 to 1925. The period includes two important episodes in the Regimental record - one, the Ulster affair in 1914, when the Officers of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade by their honourable and unselfish conduct averted the imminent danger of a Civil War; the other the Great War, in which the Regiment displayed its usual valour and discipline, and gained its usual honour and distinction. Its long Roll of Casualties and rewards is sufficient testimony to the way in which its duties were performed in the Field. In writing the record of the Regiment during the war I have only entered into the details of those actions in which the 16th themselves took part. For the rest enough only is given to enable a reader to follow the general course of the campaign. I am indebted to Colonel Cecil Howard for the account of the Regiment in India and Egypt and for the Polo Appendix. The maps are those given in the official History of the War, and have been supplied to me by the Director General of Ordnance Survey, and have been used by special permission of the War Office. Book Lost Comrades

Download or read book Lost Comrades written by Dan S. White and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of generation as a historical category has never been used more effectively than in Lost Comrades. The socialists of the Front Generation, young men in 1914, were driven into politicalactivity and ideological exploration by the experience of the First World War. Their efforts torenew socialism, to carry it beyond Marxism andbeyond the working class, were profound andoriginal, yet ultimately they failed. Lost Comrades follows the Front Generationsocialists from their questioning of Marxistorthodoxies in the 1920s into their confrontationswith the twin challenges of fascism and worlddepression in the early 1930s. Responding to thesedangers, they devised—with little success—counterpropaganda against the fascists and planningblueprints for the economy. Eventually, some ofthe most prominent—Sir Oswald Mosley inBritain, Hendrik de Man in Belgium, Marcel Déatin France—shifted their hopes to fascism or, dur-ing the Second World War, to collaborationism inHitler's Europe. Others, however, like CarloMierendorff and Theodor Haubach in Germany, ended as martyrs in the anti-Nazi resistance. Yeteven these divergent paths showed parallelsreflecting their common starting point. In tracing these unfulfilled careers, Whitebrings a new clarity to the hopes and limitationsof European socialism between the two worldwars.

Book Dorothy Brooke and the Fight to Save Cairo s Lost War Horses

Download or read book Dorothy Brooke and the Fight to Save Cairo s Lost War Horses written by Grant Hayter-Menzies and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in June 1883 to an aristocratic Scottish family, Dorothy Gibson-Craig was brought up with dogs and horses. In 1926 she married Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Brooke, recipient of the Distinguished Service Order in World War I and a writer on equine culture. She followed her new husband to Cairo, where she discovered thousands of malnourished and suffering former British war horses leading lives of backbreaking toil and misery. Brought to the Middle East by British forces during the Great War, these ex-cavalry horses had been left behind at the war’s end, abandoned like used equipment too costly to send home. In Dorothy Brooke and the Fight to Save Cairo’s Lost War Horses Grant Hayter-Menzies chronicles not only the lives and eventual rescue of these noble creatures, who after years of deprivation and suffering found respite in Brooke’s Old War Horse Memorial Hospital, but also the story of the challenges of founding and maintaining an animal-rescue institution on this scale. The legacy of the Old War Horse Memorial Hospital and its founder endures today in the dozens of international Brooke animal-welfare facilities dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys, and mules across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The author, Grant Hayter-Menzies, is making a donation of 20% of the royalties from the book to The Brooke Hospital for Animals and 20% of the royalties to its affiliate in Egypt, Brooke Hospital for Animals (Egypt). Neither the author or the publisher receives any payment from Brooke or any other party in connection with sales of this book. The Brooke Hospital for Animals is a charity registered in England and Wales no. 1085760.
