Book History of the Scottish Church Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Scottish Church Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by W. Stephen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Scottish Church, Vol. 2 The author has much reason to be gratified with the criticisms of the press on the first volume of his history. His statement in the preface that he did not profess to be colourless in his opinions, was interpreted by some critics as an admission that he had written in the spirit and with the design of a partisan. He submits that the words were susceptible of a different interpretation. The writer of Church history, who is aware of his own bias in things ecclesiastical, is the more likely to be on his guard against it, and to steer an even course between divergent lines of historical representation. This has been his honest endeavour in the second volume as in the first. But as the modern period, now brought under review, bristles with controversial matter over which historians have disputed from the Reformation downwards, he has no very sanguine expectation that his treatment of it will escape the charge of partisanship from extreme men of any school. To succeed in satisfying such as are themselves partisans would assuredly be the clearest proof of partisanship. The author desires to express his obligations to the Rev. George Sutherland, Portsoy, the Rev. J. C. Barry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to the Present Time But the chiefs of the Covenanters had now gone too far to recede, or even to remain inactive. They therefore spread abroad a false and malicious report, that the king intended to invade the kingdom with English troops: upon this ground they summoned a meeting, or convention, ofthe noblemen and commissioners of burghs, to meet at lldinburgh on the 20th of February. At this convention a paper was read, which had been drawn up by Balmerino, llope (the king's advocate), and Henderson (moderator of the late Assembly), recommending an appeal to arms, and using such arguments for itsjustification as tended to inflame the passions and prejudices of the meeting. The reasons adduced were declared to be so convincing, to men whose minds were previously made up, that instantly all of them, with one voice, consented to the listing ofan army, and voted general Leslie to be the commander thereof. The reasons hich had been submitted to the convention, and had been found so convincing to tlieui, were immediately published and dispersed to all parts of the kingdom, and the convention ordained, that every minister should read this treasonable do cument from their pulpits, and frame their discourses so as to procure an universal consent amongst their parishioners. Download or read book A History of the Church in Scotland Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Robertson Macewen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church in Scotland, Vol. 2 When we scrutinize the movement in Scotland, we find no swift or startling change, but a gradual process of enlighten ment, the permeation of society in all its grades and classes by new ideas and ideals and the rise of new relationships, social, economic and political, resulting in emancipation from a bondage which had been due partly to ignorance, partly to isolation, partly to feudal obligations and the barbarisms of clan life. Political historians have frequently ascribed the revolution which took place in 1560 to those diplomatic negotiations which were recorded in State Papers, and specially to the change in the relations of Scotland to France and England; while many Church historians have written as if feudalism and the papacy had been omnipotent in their respective departments, until they gave way before the aggressions of Geneva Protestantism. But in fact these were only consequences, or, at the most, stages, of a trans formation which was assured, if not accomplished, at a time when England was still regarded as the Auld Enemy, ' and before Calvin had set foot in Switzerland. Book The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland Vol 2 of 4

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Restoration to the Revolution Were we to form an estimate of Mr Wodrow's History, by the rules which rhetoricians have laid down for historical composition, we should be apt to draw most unfavourable conclusions. If that alone is entitled to the name of History which bears its reader along with the flow of a regular and well-compacted narrative; which descends not to the minutiae of private and domestic life; and which gives us the substance and the results of information acquired, rather than the information itself; then, most assuredly, will the work of our venerable author be found to occupy no very lofty niche in the gallery of historical portraiture. But it is the part of candour to judge of a work, not by a standard of our own, however just and equitable it may be, but by a fair and impartial estimate of the object which the author had in his eye at the time, and of the fidelity with which that object has been realized. Had the "History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland" been composed according to the rules laid down by the critics, and so admirably exemplified by many ancient and many modern names, we might unquestionably have had a better written narrative; but the church and the world would have lost much by the exchange. As the case actually stands, we have presented to us a most valuable depository of minute and well-authenticated facts, bearing with more or less aptitude on the general character of the period. We have a most exact and vivid picture of the manners of the age; and sketches of the leading individuals drawn to the life, in their actions and habits. We are admitted behind the scenes, and favoured with a view of the ever shifting agency by which the machine of public affairs is kept in play. We see passing in array before us, not only the great actors on the stage, but their less prominent, though not less important minions; while the great public men themselves arc stripped of their assumed disguise, and exhibited exactly as they are. The stately march of national events is so associated with the incidents of private and familiar life, as to produce a result not altogether in harmony with the established rules of historical composition, and yet singularly advantageous to the real student of human character. It is not the political, nor the literary, nor the constitutional, nor even the merely ecclesiastical history of the period that is given; but while there is a mixture more or less of them all, there is what the author had professedly in his eye throughout, the internal "history of the sufferings of the church," both in its associated capacity, and in the experience of individuals. The rigid historian might have confined him self almost exclusively to the first of these, and on this principle an interesting narrative might have been formed. But it is by the union of both objects that our historian has realized his own judiciously selected plan, and now stands forth to our merited regard as the only minute, and comprehensive, and faithful annalist of the period. Such another historian of the eventful era, from 1638 to 1660, is still a desideratum in our national literature; and I verily believe, that with all their prejudices, the Scotts and the Sharpes, and the Russels, and the Pearsons, of anti-covenanting celebrity, would be quite overjoyed to meet with such another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church History of Scotland, From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Century, Vol. 1 of 2 Our best Scottish Ecclesiastical Histories are confined to particular periods. Indeed, so far as I know, there is not one which will conduct the student from the epoch of Christianity to the day in which he lives. This is the task I have undertaken; but in traversing this long tract of time I have naturally lingered longest on those periods which are either most interesting or most instructive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church History of Scotland From the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Time, Vol. 2 of 2 While these things were doing in London, the Covenanters in Scotland had made up their mind that the mere discontinu ance of the Book of Canons, and Liturgy, and the abolition of the High Commission, would not satisfy them that they must have a General Assembly and a parliament to give the stamp of legal authority to their worship and discipline. They were determined to place no dependence upon the absolute will of a monarch who had shown that all his predilections were against them.2 Their appeal was from the king to the law. Some of them went farther, and already began to reduce to practice their own favourite notions of ecclesiastical govern 1nent.some presbyteries relieved their perpetual moderators of their duties some removed uncovenanted clergymen from their parishes some ordained ministers by the laying on of the hands of the presbytery apart from the bishop. The lower orders of the people went farther, and in several cases mobbed and maltreated unhappy divines who still clung to Episcopacy and refused to take the Covenant. In all these rabbles, singular enough, the women were conspicuous in some cases even ladies of rank were unable to restrain their zeal, which furnishes Clarendon with the taunt, that the Jews, as of old, stirred up the devout and honourable women. 3. It does not appear, that the principal promoters of the reformation in thofe parts, endeavoured (0 much to bring the form of church order to the conformity, which the New Tefiament points out, as to, ren der it agreeable to the mike of civil Governors, and the inclinations of the people. The rights of pri vate judgment, which were infified upon at the council of Spires, were foon betrayed by the fame perfons who gave in a proteftation in their favours; for the united fentiments of fo many divincs were foon fubfiituted in place' of the Pope's authority, and the power of general councils; and it was ac counted as criminal to depart from the formularies of'religion, which were then compofed, as it was to renounce the papal power, and the jurifdieiion of the Bilhop of Rome. The firfl defign ofithefe for mularies was, to exhibit to the world an account of what were the principles of the pretefiants and they meant no more by them, than a public vindication of themfelves, from the falfe accufations of the papifis: but after they began to increafe, and he came more refpeetable in the eyes of the world, they made theic confefiions terms of their fellow ihip, and refufed their communion to fuch as did nor agree with them in every particular.
