Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scandinavia of the Scandinavians There are unmistakable indications in England and America of increasing interest in the contemporary progress of the Scandinavian peoples. These descendants of a once warlike race are devoting their untiring energies to experiments in the arts of peace. Although they number fewer than 11,000,000 souls the Scandinavians have not failed to furnish the modern world with their quota of successful plans for social betterment, working-man's insurance, co-operative methods of farming, discoveries in physics, cunning inventions of mechanical devices, and important contributions to music, painting, poetry, and drama. The introductory chapter of this book is a brief review of the history of the three nations that constitute Scandinavia - Denmark, Norway, and Sweden - setting forth their relations to one another. Knit by racial sympathies and a formerly common language, these three peoples have been drawn even closer together by the Great War now, December, 1914, raging close to their borders. Subsequent chapters treat of their life and thought at the present day. Incidents from earlier periods are only touched upon in order to give the necessary historical setting. Temporary sojourn among the hospitable and warmhearted people of each land, and intimate business and social relations with men of affairs, have resulted in the assembling of the facts and impressions contained in the following pages. Many have been my helpers and advisers. Their names, some of them, appear in the text. All are authorities on subjects bearing upon Scandinavia in the making. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scandinavian Element in the United States In this flux of humanity, mobile almost to fluidity, various in promise of utility, shifting in proportions of the good and bad, of pauper, refugee, and fanatic, or bird of passage, sweatshop man, and home-builder, there has been such an interplay of subtle and vast forces that no just and final appreciation can as yet be reached. But some sort of tentative conclusions may be arrived at by intensive study of each immigrant group, following it through years and generations, searching for its ramifications in the body politic and social. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scandinavians on the Pacific, Puget Sound On solicitation of prominent scandinavian-americans, a year ago, I undertook to write a volume or two, entitled, Scandinavians on the Pacific. At the launching of this idea an untold number rallied around me with sweet ton gues, but many who pretended to furnish historical data fabricated delusive smiles of impertinent selfishness. Others, however, have been frank in ushering kind assistance. The author is indebted to the following gentlemen for willing advice and information: John Blaauw, Editor of Tacoma Tidende, Tacoma; George Bech, Author of Haeng Ham etc., Seattle; Rev. T. J. Moen, Fairhaven and N. P. Leque. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scandinavian History The Hyperboreans. - The ancient Greeks and Romans had very false, and what seem to us, now that we know so much more about it than they did - very absurd ideas of the north of Europe; for they thought that it was all made up of ice, snow, mists, clouds and darkness, and that far, far away beyond the north wind, there lived a race of beings, whom they called Hyperboreans, or Outside North-winders!
