Book The Reviewer Reviewed

Download or read book The Reviewer Reviewed written by Simplex Simplex and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reviewer Reviewed: Or, an Answer to Strictures Contained in the Princeton Biblical Repertory, for July, 1840. On Dr. Hill's History of the Rise, Progress, Genius, and Character, of American Presbyterianism Mosheim respecting false doctrine among the Huguenots might be true, and yet all that Professor Hodge had said respecting ecclesias tical polity, be strictly true, and all that Dr. Hill had said upon the subject, be entirely wrong. This goes upon the supposition that all that was quoted from Mosheim and others, related to doctrine, and not at all to government - whereas a reference to those quotations will show that reference was had to their ideas respecting indulgence and tolerance when they were excluding or disciplining those who differed from them in sentiment; as well as to terms of uniting with others, who differed on non-essential points. But as if afraid to rest Professor Hodge's defence upon so flimsy an argument, Dr. Mosheim's character is about as rudely treated, (and from his own admission quite unnecessarily, ) as he had just treated Dr. Hill's character. In a short parenthetical sentence, Mosheim's veracity as a historian is flatly called in question. The historical verity of whose statements we are far from admitting. After such strange language, one would naturally expect to be told wherein he had falsified, and where better and more authentic historical information could be obtained. But not a word of this. You lie, Sir, is all the argument. This is a summary way Of ending an argument and claiming a victory. The fact is, that Mosheim's statement so completly answered and refuted what Professor Hodge had alleged, that no alternative seemed to he left, but to deny that Mosheim deserved any credit at all, Or to leave Professor Hodge convicted of being as ignorant of historical facts, as he now undertakes to prove that Dr. Hill was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Presbyterianism: From Its Foundations to the Reunion of 1869 History of the Presbyterian Church, by Dr. Charles Hodge, Part L, p. 21. Of this kind was foiled by some baleful disaster. The earliest failure on record, probably, was that of the Eagle's Wing, a ship freighted for America in 1637 with ministers and people from Scotland and Ireland, to follow the example of the Puritans who had so recently embarked from England and successfully reached these shores. Everything seemed to be well appointed for conveying to a friendly haven here a compacted Presbyterian body, in full shape, as a model of elderships already made, and sure to begin a commonwealth of session, presbytery and synod. But the sea wrought and was tempestuous, and storms of heaven compelled them to return.* John Bramhall, archbishop of Armagh, who represented prelacy in Ireland, lashed the dis appointed voyagers with ridicule in Latin verse. But Samuel Rutherford, of Scotland, with prophetic sympathy, saw deeper into the mys tery of that result, and wrote, in one of those letters which have a saintly fragrance for all generations, I would not have you think it strange that your journey to New England has got such a dash. It hath, indeed, made my heart heavy, but I know that it is no dumb Providence, but a speaking one, whereby the Lord speaks his mind to you, though for the present ye do not well understand what he saith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism: Its Principles and Practice The Presbyterian Church has no denominational Shibboleth with which to rally the masses, - which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage gained is that it prevents Presby terianism from being narrow and sectarian, but it is at a distinct disadvantage in contending with the bigot characterized by intense sectarian propaganda and proverbial zeal. The task of Presby terianism is to produce a loyal, intelligent membership, stalwart in faith and character, yet liberal towards all evangelical denomina tions. This attempt to accomplish the impossible is 'measurably successful in cultivating catholicity on the one hand and denomina tional loyalty on the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Early History of the Presbyterian Church in America: Addressed to the Late Rev. Robert M. Laird This little volume contains the principal articles of a religious characte, found among the papers of their lamented author. The letters on the early churches in the Peninsula, were the last labours of his hand. They were undertaken at the request of the Presbytery of Lewes. They were left unfinished; most of them in his first draught, were, since his death, collected on scattered pieces of paper. It is scarcely justice to his memory to publish them, as they are, undoubtedly, far from what they would have been, had he been spared to give them the finishing touch of his own pen. "A member of the congregation of Norrington applied to the synod, supplicating the ordination of Mr. Kinkead, as fast as our stated rules and methods Till permit. The synod, at considerable length, heard the reasons offered by the Presbyteries of Philadelphia and Newcastle why they could not attend on the trials and ordination, so as to answer the request of the congregations. The congregations of Great Valley and Norrington belonging to Philadelphia Presbytery, they ordered that said presbytery should attend the trials and manage the ordination; and, lest a delay should be occasioned by the paucity and distance of the members, Mr. Cathcart is ordered to correspond with said presbytery as an assistant." He was ordained, and the synod ordered him "to correspond with Newcastle Presbytery in August." In 1754, he spent three months in Virginia, and was dismissed from his charge, and was publicly disowned by the presbytery, in 1757. Immediately on the union, (May 31, 1758, ) Philadelphia Presbytery directed Gilbert Tennent to write to him, and inform . him that he must desist from preaching at Middletown, (now in Delaware county, Pennsylvania, ) as it was offensive to the congregation and to the presbytery. He was informed of the time of the next meeting. The records of the presbytery furnish no further notice of him; but, in 1759, at his request, the synod appointed a committee to converse with him. "He came next day, and gave in a paper to the synod, as, he says, for his own exoneration, in order to his continuing a member. The synod, having never excluded him, concluded to consider and deal with him as a member. The minute being read to him, he refused membership notwithstanding." Windham, in New Hampshire, obtained his services, and...

He was under special obligation to the late Mrs. Rebecca Junkin, of Steuben ville, Ohio, for the loan of a copy of the original diary kept by the Rev. John Cuthbertson; to the late Rev. Dr. John Forsythe for references; to the Rev. Dr. J. B. Scouller for rare documents and references; and to Drs. Thomas Sproull, T. Yv. J. Wylie, Josias A. Chancellor, . Revs. J. W. Sproull, D. B. It is a grat ification to know that among the many hundreds of letters received, no less touching and kind were those from ministers who have gone out from the Reformed Presbyterian Church, thus showing that they have not forgotten the home of their birth and training, and to which they are much indebted. The manuscript prepared for the composition of this book was sufficient to make two volumes each of the present size, and the copy had to be cut down about one-half in order that the whole scope of the contemplated work might be included in one volume of reasonable sizeand price. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Bible Presbyterian Church and Its Agencies: Maintaining the True Spiritual Succession of American Presbyterianism in Doctrine and Life, in Worship and Government The Westminster Confession of Faith was born out of loyalty to the Bible. It is not the sole possession of any one church group but it has been since its birth the operating standard of the historic Presbyterian Church. From olden days the Presbyterian Church recognized the Confession to be a faithful summary of the great doctrines of the Bible. Presbyterian doctrinal standards include the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. These are three state ments, varying in form, fullness, and purpose, of the same creed. They are known as the West minster standards because the famous Assembly of divines that framed them held their sessions in England's great Abbey of Westminster. The Westminster Assembly Was a representative body, called by the English Parliament, made up of one hundred and twenty-one divines, eleven lords, twenty commoners, from all the counties of England and the Universities of Oxford and Cam bridge with seven Commissioners from Scotland. Many of them jeopardized their livings by accepting the Parliament's appointment, and after the Restoration cheerfully sacrificed their earthly all for conscience' sake (smith, E. W., The Creed of Presbyterians, The Westminster Press, 1902, p. The Assembly was a select assembly com posed of scholars, theologians, orators, statesmen men well qualified to voice the deepest religious convictions.
