Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] The brilliant two-volume account of the Indian Mutiny written by the eminent military historian Colonel George Malleson, richly illustrated with maps, plans and portraits. “MALLESON, GEORGE BRUCE (1825-1898), colonel and military writer, born in London on 8 May 1825...Through Colonel Oliphant, a director of the East India Company, he was given a direct commission as ensign on 11 June 1842, and was posted to the 65th Bengal native infantry on 26 Sept. He obtained a lieutenancy in the 33rd B.N.I. on 28 Sept. 1847. He was appointed to the commissariat department on 30 Nov. 1852, and served in the second Burmese war...On 28 March 1856 he was appointed an assistant military auditor-general, and he was engaged with accounts at Calcutta during the mutiny. He wrote 'The Mutiny of the Bengal Army,' which was published anonymously in 1857, and was known as 'the red pamphlet.' In this he pointed to Lord Dalhousie's administration, and especially the annexation of Oudh, as mainly responsible for the revolt... “He had been a frequent contributor to the 'Calcutta Review' since 1857, and was also a correspondent of the 'Times.' After his retirement he devoted himself to literature, dealing chiefly with military history, especially Indian. He had a broad grasp, great industry, a vigorous and picturesque style, but was apt to be a strong partisan. He did much to draw attention to Russian progress in Central Asia, and its dangers to British rule in India. He died at 27 West Cromwell Road, London, on 1 March 1898...” -Oxford Dict. of Bio.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mutiny of the Bengal Army: An Historical Narrative, by One Who Has Served Under Sir Charles Napier It is very evident, therefore, that by means of this pernicious system of caste, the men of a Bengal regiment, though nominally subject to the British Crown, are really under the orders and con trol of a Brahminical clique, formed in each regiment, constantly corresponding with one another, and acting without any sense of responsibility whatever. Book excerpt: A history from 1599 to 1895 Lieutenant Cardew's excellent history of the Bengal Native Army is an invaluable reference resource for all those interested in the British in India and the armies of the Honourable East India Company and the Raj period that followed them. This substantial work covers the span of the activities of the Bengal presidency's forces from the very earliest times of its history, but of course includes all its campaigns and battles, regiments and notable personalities both friend and foe throughout the turbulent period of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Too many to itemise here, within this books pages the reader will discover Rajputs, Mahrattas, Moguls, Pindarees, Ghurkhas, Burmese, Afghans and Sikhs all battling against the might of the British Empire for dominance of the sub-continent or the retention of control over their own domains. In 1857 the Great Indian Mutiny erupted within the heart of the Bengal Army and this bloody period is described in considerable detail. The post Mutiny period covers the many troubles upon India's North Western Frontier as well as campaigns where the Indian forces of the Queen Emperor were required to fight her wars in other theatres and countries.

Book Sketch of the Services of the Bengal Nat

Download or read book Sketch of the Services of the Bengal Nat written by F.G. Cardew and published by . This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians still debate the causes of the Indian Mutiny. This history, drawn from a formidible array of sources, should add ammunition to the controversy. It covers the whole history of the force that rebelled in 1857 - the Bengal Army- from the raising of the first prototype units by the East India Company in the 17th century, down to the height of the British Raj in the 1890s, and includes many half forgotten campaigns and actions. It was compiled as a continuous narrative by a serving officer in the Indian Army, Lieut. F. G. Cardew, before being revised and edited in the Military department of the Government of India by Mr. G. W. de Rhe-Phlipe. The book is particularly valuable as a source for the Bengal Artillery. Provides much valuable background information on the organization of and disaffection in the Bengal Army. Includes an index, a glossary of Indian terms and words, and a Chronology of Indian army corps.
