Book The Official History Of The New Zealand Rifle Brigade Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Official History Of The New Zealand Rifle Brigade Illustrated Edition written by Captain William Esmonde Lennox Napier and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 40 Illustrations of the officers, men and battles they engaged in. The Rifle Brigade has a long and distinguished history in the British Army as a corps of elite troops with a fighting pedigree stretching back to the times of Wellington, the Peninsular War and Waterloo. During the First World War the huge number of volunteers from New Zealand overstripped the ability of the administration to provide more than one brigade of infantry in 1915. However in 1916 a second brigade was formed and was designated as the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, marrying the traditions of the British Rifle Brigade for the highest standards of soldiery and the New Zealand traditions of courage, native skill and toughness. The New Zealand Rifle Brigade fought with distinction across the British zones of the battlefields of France and Flanders. As their official historian recounts with his vivid narrative from the bloody but successful debut at the battle of Flers-Courcelette, the battle of Messines, Passchendaele and the dark days of the German offensives in 1918, the “Dinks” as they were known covered themselves in glory. They would produce two Victoria cross winners from their ranks and many of their men would return to their native islands with other high honours for gallantry and bravery. However, the losses of these brave men were prodigious and the names of the fallen are inscribed in full detail in an appendix at the end of the book.

Book History And Campaigns Of The Rifle Brigade Vol II 1800 1809

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Rifle Brigade from 1809 to 1813 - mainly Peninsular War in which the regiment was involved from start to finish. On 10th May 1809 the strength of the 1st Battalion was 1,536 and the 2nd 1,579 and so a 3rd Battalion was formed. The unfortunate 2nd Battalion was involved in the Walcheren expedition August to December 1809 and when our troops evacuated the place battle deaths had amounted to 111, deaths from disease numbered over 4,000. But the main subject in this volume is the Peninsular War in which the regiment played a very active part from beginning to end. All three battalions were involved and seventeen Battle Honours were awarded, the highest number for any regiment in that campaign. The descriptions of operations are in detail, supported by superb maps. Throughout his account the author draws upon contemporary sources, official correspondence, despatches, reports, letters, diaries, reminiscences and on the work of such historians as Fortescue and Oman. —Print Ed.

Book History of the London Rifle Brigade 1859 1919

Download or read book History of the London Rifle Brigade 1859 1919 written by Various Contributors and published by . This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Rifle Brigade (LRB) began life in 1859 as a Volunteer Rifle Corps with the title London Rifle Volunteer Brigade and the motto Primus in Urbe. It was a sore point that when the London Regiment was formed in 1908 as part of the new Territorial Force, the four Royal Fusilier Volunteer battalions (also London battalions) were given precedence relegating the LRB to fifth place, despite its motto; it became the 5th (City of London) Bn The London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade). The first 60 or so pages deal with the pre-war history; they sent five officers and 145 NCOs and men to S Africa and the names are given in an appendix. The rest of book is devoted to the Great War in which three battalions served, the 1st and 2nd Battalions on the Western Front, the 3rd was a training battalion. Each battalion is covered separately concluding, in the case of the active service battalions, with a detailed itinerary. On the outbreak of war the LRB was in the 2nd Brigade of the 1st London Division, which was effectively broken up in the early months to provide replacements for regular battalions coming home from abroad and reinforcements for the BEF. In September 1914 a second line battalion was formed and in November a third line giving 1/5th, 2/5th and 3/5th Battalions of the LRB. The 1st Battalion was soon in France where it arrived on 5 November 1914. During 1914/15 it was with 4th and 3rd Divisions and at GHQ; in February 1916 the 1st London Division was reformed in France and numbered 56th; the 1/5th LRB rejoined the division in 169th Brigade where it remained for the rest of the war. In all it suffered just under 4,200 casualties of whom 755 were dead. The 2nd Battalion arrived in France in January 1917 as part of 174th Brigade, 58th (2nd/1st London) Division. A year later, In the reorganisation of the BEF in which divisions were reduced from twelve to nine battalions the 2/5th LRB was broken up and the personnel distributed among other battalions. This is a very good history with many informative appendices including casualty lists by battalions, nominal roll of all officers who served between 1859 and 1919 with service, and in a number of cases biographical details (genealogists), honours and awards including mentions (medallists). The divisional report on the attack on Gommecourt on 1st July 1916, with casualty details is included as is the translation of the War Diary of the 55th Reserve Infantry Regiment which opposed them.

Book History And Campaigns Of The Rifle Brigade Vol I 1800 1809

Download or read book History And Campaigns Of The Rifle Brigade Vol I 1800 1809 written by Colonel Willoughby Verner and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Story of The Rifle Brigade from its formation in 1800, its organization, uniform, equipment, arms and training and battles ending at Corunna in January 1809. The Rifle Brigade was formed in 1800 by detachments from various regiments as the ‘Experimental Corps of Riflemen’ initially and then ‘Rifle Corps’. It was under this name that the new regiment first made its mark under Nelson in the following year at the Battle of Copenhagen. In 1803 it was designated the 95th (Rifle) Regiment and in 1816, after Waterloo, it was taken out of the numbered regiments of the line and styled ‘The Rifle Brigade.’ In this first part the author, who served in the regiment, traces the evolution of the Rifle Corps with the advent of the rifle, which replaced the musket, and its effect on tactics...Dress, drill, equipment and armament all feature and the important period spent at Shorncliffe when Sir John Moore, the father of the Light Brigade, commanded the garrison; he was then regarded as “ the best trainer of troops England has ever possessed.” The first taste of action came with the Ferrol Expedition in 1800 which had the destruction of the Spanish base. The ‘Experimental Corps of Riflemen’ contributed detachments numbering 170 under the command of Stewart. They were first ashore on 25th August and it was the only corps in action on that day, which henceforth was celebrated as the birthday of the Regiment. During the next nine years covered in this book the regiment served on many fronts—Copenhagen, Germany, Monte Video, Buenos Ayres and finally the Peninsula where the 2nd Battalion arrived on 12th July 1808 and fought its first action against the French, at Rolica on 17th August. This first part ends with the terrible retreat to and battle of Corunna in January 1809 where Moore “was struck down by a round shot ......the ball carrying away his left shoulder and leaving his arm hanging by the exposed tendons.” Moore died of his wounds that same evening.—Print Ed.
