Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield, Mass., 1851-1901: Published Under the Direction and Authority of the General Committee on the Occasion of the Semi-Centennial Celebration of the Company, October 11, 1901 The golden anniversary of the richardson light guard on October I I, Ioor, marks an important period in its existence. The past fifty years have brought to this honorable organization many and notable changes, a deserved prominence not limited by the bor ders of the town of Wakefield or the state of Massachusetts, and a remarkable record for patriotic service and deeds Of valor upon the battlefield. Five times the company has responded to the call of the country for volunteers and four times have the members of the Richardson Light Guard participated in the perils and hardships of actual warfare. SO it seems appropriate at this half century mile stone to perpetuate, in permanent form, a record of the principal events affecting the organization from the date of its inception to the present time. Book The Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield Massachusetts

Download or read book The Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield Massachusetts written by Barry M. Stentiford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield, Massachusetts, from its origins in 1851 until its end in 1975. What had been an institution of community members and local elites passed to town, then state, and finally federal government. During the same period, Wakefield evolved from an agrarian town to a manufacturing town and finally to a bedroom suburb, ending the practice of a handful of local elites ruling the town unchallenged. Though the rise of the National Guard was generally positive, for some militia companies, inclusion in the National Guard weakened vital bonds with their communities. In the 19th century, the Richardson Light Guard thrived under generous patrons, a supportive town, and a relatively wealthy state government. After becoming part of the National Guard in 1916, the links with its home community steadily weakened, finally breaking during World War II. After the war, the National Guard company had few links to Wakefield and was reorganized out of existence in 1975.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1864, after three bloody years of civil war and with victory seemingly within reach for the Northern armies, John Brough, Ohio's energetic wartime governor, offered his state's militia for 100 days of federal service. Ordered east for duty in forts, railways, and prisons, they freed veteran troops to make the last great push against Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. History soon overtook the Ohioans, however. They fought at Monocacy with Lew Wallace and under the watchful eye of Abraham Lincoln at Fort Stevens. They battled Mosby and other feared Southern guerrillas in Virginia and West Virginia. They fell to John Hunt Morgan's cavalry in Kentucky. They toiled and fought against thunderous Petersburg.
