Book Reno by the in the Lake and Other Stories

Download or read book Reno by the in the Lake and Other Stories written by Jim Hartman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I guess, in truth, “Reno by the/in the Lake” is my “Autobiography Light.” The material is indeed autobiographical in that little has been gleaned from any outside source and it is definitely light both in serious content and the serious nature often portrayed by an autobiography. So read on just for fun. Reno Beach was a magical place in the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, a resort town that never really quite reached its prime. It had, however attained great stature in the hearts and minds of all it entertained, especially in the imagination of a young boy who could see adventure, even in the smallest buttonhole or banal blemish. In his mind a vegetable garden became a wilderness plantation. An overturned rowboat became a fortress, a pirate’s treasure cave or a magician’s maudlin mansion. A willow tree only recently uprooted by the wind and waves of an angry possessive lake trying desperately to reclaim its own; this became the perfect home for “Tarzan (Jimmie) of the Apes.” The fact that I’m even writing this book belies the fact that the place and that little boy still live, if only in my imagination. The stories you’re about to read are about that small waterfront community just east of Toledo Ohio on the western end of Lake Erie and how it’s life; death and frequent revitalizations affected the life of one small boy, namely me. The stories are absolutely true except as altered by an aging memory, wishful thinking and delusions of grandeur, not necessarily in that order, and they represent some of the very best days of my life. I’ve been told that it’s good to share your very best. I hope you enjoy reading my stories nearly as much as I enjoyed living them. The writing’s been fun too. Some names and places may have been altered to protect the innocent and/or the guilty, but not many. Some may also be changed just because I’ve forgotten or don’t really know what I’m talking about. Please forgive me. Many may recognize themselves, a friend or family member in some of these stories and each one probably deserves whatever treatment or attention they received, either good or bad. This book is intended to be a “Bathroom Book.” This is not a negative. For those unable to grasp this creative terminology I provide the following explanation in the form of a prescription: Take in small doses. Continuous exposure could be hazardous to your health and could lead to an abrasive situation requiring an immediate application of Preparation “H.” This does not imply that either you the reader or the writer is full of . . . Anything. Should you disapprove of any of the material in this book please feel free to remove the offending pages and put them to better use right there in the “Reading Room” solving the problems of the moment. I’m sure you understand. Enjoy. Life is short. Don’t waste it on seriousness.

He then entered a homestead claim in Kingman county, but presently relinquished the same and in 1883 entered a half section of school land over the line in Roscoe township, Reno county, which he still owns and which is regarded as one of the best-kept stock farms in Reno county or central Kansas. For several years after locating in this county Mr. Brown taught school during the winters, riding six miles, back and forth every day to school and taking his pay for such service in anything of value the residents thereabout could give, which was not much. As he prospered in his cattle business Mr. Brown added to his land holdings, buying a quarter of a section nearby his Reno county place and a half section over the line in Kingman county and has for years been regarded as one of the most progressive and substantial ranchers in central Kansas. He was one of the first men in this county to see the possibility of planting the plains with trees and the veritable forest of transplanted trees and the fine orchards on his several farms attest the wisdom of his decision back in 1886, when other farmers thereabout scoffed at his enterprise, declaring that the soil of this region was not adapted to tree culture. Mr. Brown specializes in Shorthorn cattle and Poland China hogs and prospered largely. In 1893 Willis L. Brown retired from the farm and 'with his family moved to Kingman, where he ever since has made his home and where he has become one of the most conspicuous figures in the political life of the state. Though still retaining the active oversight of his extensive ranch interests Mr. Brown has found time for activities of another character and his famous sobriquet, ..

Book Historic Houses and Buildings of Reno Nevada

Download or read book Historic Houses and Buildings of Reno Nevada written by Holly Walton-Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide highlights the architectural and historical significance of more than sixty important homes, ranch houses, and buildings in Reno, Nevada. Known as The Biggest Little City in the World since the 1930s, when quickie divorces and casino gaming were legalized by the Nevada Legislature, Reno has reinvented itself several times during its nearly 150 years of history. Founded in the 1860s on the banks of the scenic Truckee River in Northern Nevada, Reno has had a fascinating journey, from its beginnings as an Emigrant Trail outpost, to its role in the mid-1930s invention of the hotel and casino industry. Cattle barons, mine speculators, and bank presidents in 19th century Reno built their mansions on the high bluff above the Truckee River, surrounded by extensive gardens, transforming the arid little town into what author Walter Van Tilburg Clark called The City of Trembling Leaves. Also featured is the beautiful University of Nevada, Reno, campus, with its Neoclassical buildings designed by Reno s most prominent architect, Frederic Delongchamps. Enhanced with both historical and contemporary photographs, the book includes maps, a glossary of architectural terms with local examples, and a list of architectural styles found in Reno.
