This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 1 The very charms of our secular historians have done much to throw church history and historians into the shade. In childhood we are fascinated with the spirit-stirring annals of Greece and Rome, and as we advance in years, Hume, Robertson, Gibbon, &c. Tend to con firm the illusion that while secular events form the staple of history, the memorials of that body to which all worldly things are subordin ated in the Divine counsels, and which is destined to surpass all earthly empires in duration and glory, are merely adventitious and episodical. Some of our histories of particular periods and churches, and many of our ecclesiastical biographies, are admirable of their kind. But, neither together nor separately, do they supply the place of more extensive works. No where do we find so long and important a period as the sixteenth century, treated with the fulness which it receives in the pages of this Genevan historian. If any be prejudiced against this work because written by a foreigner, be it remembered that this very circumstance is attended with peculiar advantages. Residing at one time in Germany, at an other in Belgium, settling finally at Geneva, and frequently visiting France, the author has had manifest facilities for collecting his materi sis, and by familiarity with some of the most important scenes of the Reformation, he has been enabled to describe these with much of the animation and graphic power of an eye-witness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 4 When a foreigner visits certain countries, as England, Scotland, or America, he is sometimes presented with the rights of citizenship. Such has been the privilege of the "History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century." From 150,000 to 200,000 copies are in circulation, in the English language, in the countries I have just mentioned; while in France the number hardly exceeds 4000. This is a real adoption, - naturalizing my Work in the countries that have received it with so much favour. I accept this honour. Accordingly, while the former Volumes of my History were originally published in France; now that, after a lapse of five years, I think of issuing a continuation of it, I do so in Great Britain. This is not the only change in the mode of publication. I did not think it right to leave to translators, as in the case of the former Volumes, the task of expressing my ideas in English. The best translations are always faulty; and the Author alone can have the certainty of conveying his idea, his whole idea, and nothing but his idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Reformation of the Sixteenth Century in Germany, Switzerland, &C, Vol. 1: Eighteenth Thousand The su denness of its action is one of these characters of the Reforma tion. The great revolutions which have drawn after them the fall of a monarchy, or an entire change of political system, or launched the human mind in a new career of developement, have been slowly and gradually prepared; the power to be displaced has long been mine and its princi pal supports have given way. It was even thus at the introduction of Christianity. But the Reformation, at the first glance, seems to ofi'er a difi'erexit aspect. The Church of Rome is seen, under Leo X., in all its strength and glory. A monk s aks, -and in the half of Europe this power and glory suddenly crum ls into dust. This revolution reminds us of the words by which the Son of God announces his second advent: As the lightning cometh forth from the west and shineth unto the east, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation, Vol. 3: In the Sixteenth Century Complaints have been made of the delay which has taken place in the publication of this third volume. Some would even have had me not to print the first before the whole was completed. There may be certain superior intellects to which conditions may be prescribed, but there are others whose feebleness must give conditions, and to this class I belong. To publish a volume at one time, at another time when I am able a second volume, and then a third, is the course which my primary duties and hum ble abilities allow me to take. Othe'r circumstances, moreover, have interposed; severe afflictions have on two occasions inter rupted the composition of this third volume, and concentrated all my affections and all my thoughts on the tomb of beloved children. The thought that it was my duty to glorify the adorable Master, who addressed those powerful calls to me, and accompanied them with so much divine consolation, could alone have given me the courage necessary to prosecute my labours.
