Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Province of Pennsylvania The History of the Province of Pennsylvania has been printed from Samuel Smith's manuscript in the library of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. As an examination of his history of New Jersey indicates, this manuscript would have been carefully edited by the author before publication, but it has been deemed best to follow the orthography and punctuation of the original. The author divided his work into two parts, of which this is the first. The second part contains: The introduction, and some account of the religious progress of the people called Quakers therein, [Pennsylvania] including the like account respecting the same people in New Jersey, as constituting one yearly meeting. This second portion was printed by Samuel Hazard in The Register of Pennsylvania, Volumes VI and VII, 1830-1831, with the exception of Chapters XVI and XVII, which were omitted as they contain nothing but a letter from Elizabeth Webb, giving an account of her religious experience, to Dr. Boehm, and his reply, both of which have we understand been published in a pamphlet; and as directions are likewise given to the transcriber of Smith's Ms. to omit copying them. Samuel Smith, the author of The History of the Province of Pennsylvania, was of Quaker stock, the great-grandson of Richard Smith of Bramham in the West Riding of Yorkshire, one of the original proprietaries of West Jersey and a signer of The Concessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, 1676. He had by his wife Anne Yeates, Samuel Smith of Bramham, who settled in West Jersey in 1694, married Elizabeth Lovett, and was a member of the General Assembly for several years. If the white settlers had brutalized and degraded them with rum, cheated them in trade, robbed them of their lands, and coarsely showed their mastery on every occasion, more than once did they pay a heavy penalty for their selfishness, shortsightedness and rascality. The American colonists feared the union of the Indians with the British, for they knew the nature of Indian warfare. An Indian was not a brave, open fighter, but a cowardly, mean one. Though hiding himself for days and weeks, and almost perishing with cold or hunger, to secure the chance of shooting his foe undiscovered, he was averse to forming into ranks and engaging in battle. Possessing a strong spirit of revenge, every white man knew that the Indian would prove relentless and untiring in compassing his destruction. Her history more than her geography gave her commanding relations to the sister colonies clustered along the western margin of the Atlantic. Her great founder and first English owner, William Penn, is the noblest character in America's colonial history. In Pennsylvania every creed and every nationality was not only tolerated but welcomed. Her colonial life was more complex than that of any sister colony. To mould this life, so unlike in nationality, in religion, in civic ideals, and in industrial experience, into a unified people is one of the noblest records in the annals of any nation. To the credit of her people this was done without persecution and without coercion. Three great groups of people laid the foundations of the Commonwealth. Beyond these, in the valleys between the Blue and the Alleghany Mountains, lived the sturdy Scotch-Irish pioneers, pushing the frontier to the Ohio Valley, repelling Indian attacks, provoking strife by their restless haste to penetrate the wilderness, and establishing churches and schools in every valley and upon every hill-top of the interior.
