Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Port of Bristol Here are many books about Bristol; the one in the hands of the T reader deals with the history of the Port in a form suitable for general reading and for reference: as far as I am aware, it is the first to treat the subject in a popular and comprehensive manner. The clocks are under municipal control, and their history and manage ment are matters of importance to all citizens. Bristol was once the second port in the kingdom; it long ago lost that position, through a variety of causes, some of which ought not to have operated. We lost our supremacy in the Atlantic steamship traffic through mistakes that should have been avoided. But in the latter half of the nineteenth century the old spirit of enterprise began to reassert itself. Many things were done to bring the port up to modern requirements. No doubt municipal control, with its multitude of counsellors, often hindered progress. How it did this, and how the forward policy ulti mately triumphed, is recorded in the following pages. Book The Port of Bristol

Download or read book The Port of Bristol written by Andy King and published by Tempus Pub Limited. This book was released on 2003 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Port of Bristol looks at a slice of the Port's long history and industrial heritage (1908 - 1977), a period in which it was thriving and growing dramatically. During the 1870s a number of granaries and mills were constructed in the City Docks, and more throughout the twentieth century at Avonmouth which, a decade later, became a major miling centre, with a million tons of grain arriving each year. Oil importing became the Port's biggest trade during the 1940s, while by the end of the 1960s there were major plants in the area producing zinc, carbon black, bricks and fertiliser. In the same decade Avonmouth was important as quarter of the UK's tea, as well as raw materials for two of Bristol's other traditional industries; cocoa and tobacco. The period covered by this book begins with the opening of the Royal Edward Dock at Avonmouth in 1908 and ends with the opening of the Royal Portbury Dock in 1977, which has since become the modern centre of the Port of Bristol, dealing with bulk cargoes, forest products and more cars than any other port in Europe. Illustrated with over 200 photographs from the Port of Bristol Authority Collection held at the Bristol Museums Service - many of which have not been seen in print before - Port of Bristol presents the reader not only with a unique insight into the everyday life of the Docks and the people who worked there, but also with a flavour of the life of the Port during a golden age.

This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses data from the Bristol Port Books to rewrite the history of trade in Bristol, including the city's early involvement with the slave trade. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were a transformative period for global commerce, with the principal focus of England's trade shifting away from trade with Europe, primarily in woollen cloth, to a new Atlantic system, with trade in a diverse range of commodities. Based on the fantastically detailed Bristol Port Books, previously thought impenetrable, and using new computer technology to analyse the vast amount of data, this book provides the first long duration history of a major Atlantic port in this period. It rewrites the history of Bristol's trade, overturning much established thinking, for example showing that trade flourished in the late Tudor and early Stuart period, demonstrating that Bristol was involved in the slave trade much earlier than was previously thought and charting the growth of commerce with North America and the Caribbean from nothing to three quarters of Bristol's imports in the short period from the 1630s to the 1650s. Overall, the book represents a major contribution to understanding how the Atlantic economy worked and how it developed in this crucial period.

Book Tales of an Old Sea Port

Download or read book Tales of an Old Sea Port written by Wilfred Harold Munro and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of an Old Sea Port: A General Sketch of the History of Bristol, Rhode Island, Including, Incidentally, an Account of the Voyages of the Norsemen, So Far as They May Have Been Connected With Narragansett Bay; And Personal Narratives of Some Notable Voyages Accomplished by Sai From the earliest days of the Plymouth Colony the name Mount Hope Lands has been applied to the peninsula in Narragansett Bay of which Bristol, Rhode Island, is the chief town. The history of this town is more crowded with notable incident than that of any other in New England. First and most picturesque is the story of the Norsemen. Around Mount Hope the legends of the Norsemen cluster, shadowy, vague, elusive, and yet altogether fascinating. Only legends they are and must remain. After the lapse of a thousand years of changing climates and of varying shores no man can definitely locate the Vinland of the Vikings. Many have attempted to do so, and, like the late Professor E. N. Horsford, have established their theses to their own satisfaction and the satisfaction of the present dwellers in their Vinland, but they have not succeeded in convincing any one else.
