Belgium and Holland both belong to the Netherlands, but three centuries have now divided the Netherlanders into two nations. Before the end of the sixteenth century there was, however, no thought of a separation between the Northern and Southern Netherlands. This history aims to show how the Dutch and the Belgians, the people of the Netherlands, developed from the races of North-western Germany and how the former separated from the latter. In olden time, the Netherlands formed part of the terri tory of two great families of nations, Germany and Gaul, separated by the Rhine. About the beginning of our era, Rome annexed to its empire the country on the left of the river, and extended its authority over some tribes upon the right bank, as the Batavians and Frisians, who were more closely bound to Rome than most other Ger mans. Thus the stronger influence of Rome's civilisation early distinguished the Netherlanders from the Germans beyond the Ems and Yssel.
