Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Peninsular War, Vol. 2: Jan.-Sept. 1809, From the Battle of Corunna to the End of the Talavera Campaign Neither Napier nor any other historian of the Peninsular War has gone into the question of Beresford's reorganization of the Portuguese army. Comparing English and Portuguese documents, I have succeeded in working it out, and trust that Chapter III of Section XIII, and Appendix No. V, may suffice to demonstrate Beresford's very real services to the allied cause. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War in the Peninsula and in the South of France, Vol. 2 of 6: From the Year 1807 to the Year 1814 On the 24th of July, Foy brought Soult the king's concur rence for the combined operations projected, where upon he repaired to Salamanca, designing to unite the three corps there; but hearing of Victor's first retreat from the Alberche to the Guadarama river, he directed Mortier to march the 28th upon Plasencia by Fuente Roble and Bejar, and placed La Houssaye's and Lorge's dragoons under his command: the remainder of the 2ud corps were to follow whenever N ey, who closed the rear, should be in motion. That efi'ected, he wrote thus 'my urgent desire is that your majesty may not fight a general battle before you are certain of the concentration of all my forces near Plasencia. The most important results will be obtained, if your majesty will abstain from attaching until the moment when a knowledge of my march causes the enemy to retrace his steps, which he must do or he is lost.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Peninsular War, Vol. 1: 1807-1809, From the Treaty of Fontainebleau to the Battle of Corunna I have worked at the Record Office on the British official papers of the first years of the war, especially noting all the passages which are omitted in the printed dispatches of Moore and other British generals. The suppressed paragraphs (always placed within brackets marked with a pencil) contain a good deal of useful matter, mainly criticisms on individuals which it would not have been wise to publish at the time. There are a considerable number of intercepted French dispatches in the collection, and a certain amount of correspondence with the Spaniards which contains facts and figures generally unknown. Among the most interesting are the letters of General Leith, who was attached to the head quarters of Blake; in them I found by far the best account of the operations of the Army of Galicia in Oct. - Nov., 1808, which I have come upon.
