Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patterson Log Cabin America has gone a long way beyond log cabin days and sentiments. But it is not a bad thing to preserve a tangible reminder of the days when our forefathers struggled to win this country from the savages and create a dwelling place for those who came after them. Perhaps these re minders may serve as silent antidotes to the fierce pace which luxury keeps in this republic; the republic begun with so much privation, self-sacri fice and bravery and ending in such widespread luxury and extravagance. The one-roomed log cabin now standing on the triangular piece of ground at the junction of Main and Brown Streets, south of Dayton, was built by Colonel Robert Patterson, the grand father of Mr. John H. Patterson. Its situation was originally at Lexington, Kentucky, where it was one of the earliest houses erected. Since then it has had three sites since its first owner and his pioneer friends hewed the trees, shaped the logs and piled them into walls in the depth of the Kentucky wilderness. Download or read book The Log Cabin An Illustrated History written by Andrew Belonsky and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A stunning, image-driven examination of the "uniquely American symbol of home and hearth” —BuzzFeed (Books Gift Guide) "Lavishly illustrated, this book by a Cincinnati native tells the story of America through its iconic structure — the log cabin. In lively prose," —Columbus Dispatch "The perfect holiday gift for grown-ups who graduated past Lincoln Logs," —Mother News Network Like a wooden security blanket that Americans reach for when times get tough, the log cabin has endured as a uniquely American symbol of home and hearth. This strain of cabin fever is no fleeting trend: It has struck at regular intervals since the early 1900s, when log cabin vacations first became an option for an increasingly mobile America. Now the cozy cabin aesthetic is found, like a collective fantasy, in every corner of our national culture. But how did it all begin? This is an image-driven history of log cabins in America. Exploring the log cabin’s hidden past, this book draws on colonial diaries and journalistic accounts, as well as paintings, illustrations, and graphics to show how the log cabin—once derided as a poor immigrant’s hovel—became an American institution and a modern ambition. Bursting with quirk, charm, and fascinating trivia, The Log Cabin is the perfect companion for cabin dwellers, vacationers, and daydreamers alike.

Book The History of Pioneer Lexington 1779 1806

Download or read book The History of Pioneer Lexington 1779 1806 written by Charles R. Staples and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Kentucky pioneer life, Charles R. Staples creates a colorful record of Lexington's first twenty-seven years. He writes of the establishment of an urban center in the midst of the frontier expansion, and in the process documents Lexington's vanishing history. Staples begins with the settlement of the town, describing its early struggles and movement toward becoming the "capitol" of Fayette County. He also presents interesting pictures of the early pioneers and their livelihood: food, dress, houses, cooking utensils, "house raisings," religious meetings, horse races, and other types of entertainment. First published in 1939, this reprint provides those interested in the early history of Kentucky with a comprehensive look at Lexington's pioneer period. Staples recreates a time when downtown's busiest streets were still wilderness and a land rich with agricultural potential was developing commercial elements. Because he wrote during a period when much of pioneer Lexington remained, he provides a wealth of primary information that could not be assembled again.
