Book excerpt: Join Bielawa as he navigates a precarious path through the unforgettably macabre and scandalous misdeeds of Bridgeport. Beneath the smokestacks of the gritty cityscape of Bridgeport, Connecticut is the shocking criminal underbelly of this New England community. Sin and vice have long had a home on the shores of the Long Island Sound, and Bridgeport's sinister past is littered with tales of pirates, mobsters, bizarre Victorian murders, and even rumors of a doctor's attempts to reanimate the dead. Historian Michael J. Bielawa investigates such bizarre crimes as the unsolved murder of philanthropist James Beardsley, and the grisly discovery in Yellow Mill Pond during the 19th century, which helped legitimize forensic science. Join Bielawa as he navigates a precarious path through the unforgettably macabre and scandalous misdeeds of Bridgeport.
Download or read book Stratford and the Sea written by Lewis G. Knapp and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly four centuries, the maritime history of Stratford, Connecticut set the standard for the growing relationship between the United States and the sea. For the long years when ocean and river were the only practical means of travel, and from the struggles for independence to the quest for commerce that played out upon the waves, Stratford's brave sons have navigated both Long Island Sound, whose waters lap their shores, and the wide world beyond. Stratford and the Sea is the story of Captain David Hawley fighting to save the young American Revolution. It is the story of privateer Samuel Nicoll's furious attacks on British shipping in the War of 1812 that forever altered our nation's future. And it is the story of merchant captains like Dowdall, Sterling, and Benjamin who pioneered transatlantic commerce and opened up trade routes to the Orient, establishing American dominance in international trade. But there is more to the story than the men who tell it. Here also-brought to life with 200 vintage photographs, period maps, and antique postcards-is the tale of the rise and fall of the mighty oyster fishery, the birth of decoy carving as a unique American folk art, and the rush of progress and industry brought to town by Igor Sikorsky and his flying boats.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Old Town of Stratford of the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut The task of making this book, such as it is, is ended. The work upon it as the history of one of the oldest towns in the State, including one of the youngest and most prosperous cities, has been very attractive and entertaining, and the only regret the author has concerning it is that the income from the sale of the work would not pay for another year's labor, by which a degree of completeness, somewhat satisfactory, might have been attained. This is especially applicable to the genealogies, which in their present state are only the beginning of what might have been secured; which is true, after all the gratuitious labor, put upon them for several years, contributed by the Rev. B. L. Swan, formerly pastor in Stratford, Bridgeport and Monroe, in which he collected a large amount of historical facts which have made the work much more complete than it otherwise would have been. The author has also profited very much from the research and historical collections made, during many years of thoughtful gathering by R. B. Lacey, Esq., Major W. B. Hincks and George C. Waldo, Esq. Many items which they had gathered were as seed producing a hundred fold, when improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Stratford written by John D. Calhoun and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was Stratford like early in the last century? Postcards recorded important scenes and activities. Local shops often made up their own cards and folders, which residents collected and shared with friends and relatives. This postcard history of Stratford draws on such cards to show commercial and recreational life in the town's neighborhoods and along its shore. Cards depicting the early aviation industry and little-known 1912 army maneuvers in Stratford are included here. Informative captions expand on these images with stories about the town and its people.
Download or read book Bridgeport Baseball written by Michael J. Bielawa and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridgeport, Connecticut, owns a rich and diverse baseball history. People from varied backgrounds stepped up to the plate in Bridgeport's early years-sons of Irish immigrants, laborers and merchants, Asian and Latino players, and some of the first African Americans to play professional ball. Local baseball truly blossomed with "Orator" Jim O'Rourke, who returned from the big leagues and organized the Connecticut State Baseball League in 1895. Numerous Bridgeport teams evolved, including the Victors, Mechanics, Bolts, Americans, and Bears. Bridgeport Baseball traces the game from the post-Civil War era to today. Baseball beneath the roaring smokestacks of industrial Bridgeport included visits by barnstorming Major League and Negro League teams, future Hall of Famers, and a train wreck that almost killed the St. Louis Cardinals. The smokestacks are silent now, yet the legacy of Bridgeport baseball continues to evolve with the city's first professional club in nearly half a century-the Bridgeport Bluefish. The team, owners, staff, fans, and stadium have all contributed to restoring the living history that is Bridgeport Baseball.
