Book excerpt: The First World War was a human catastrophe but it also saw a dynamic development of new weapons and a new kind of war; between the lions and the donkeys came the managers – and the workers —who transformed a nation into a war machine in 48 months. This book takes you on a journey to the key places that witnessed this war effort and those at all levels of society who brought about the change. The war created a new world of vast hutted camps and a new kind of transport system which even involved a lighted barrage across the Channel. From Aldershot – the home of the British Army, to the War Office in Whitehall, from Aberdeen to Yarmouth, this is Britain’s war mapped for the first time. This book uncovers where this national revolution took place and shows how you can find the hidden world of the First World War at the end of your road.

Download or read book Official History of the Ministry of Munitions Volume IV The Supply and Control of Labour 1915 1916 written by HMSO and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 4 of 12. The foundation of the Munitions Ministry was a revolutionary step, coinciding with the 'shells scandal' in which the failure of a series of British attacks: Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert and Loos - was blamed on inadequate supplies of munitions. A press outcry was followed by questions in Parliament which threatened to bring down the Government. The Ministry was set up in response. Previously, the War Office had been responsible for designing, ordering and inspecting ammunition factories and stores. But a year of war on a scale never foreseen, the creation of armies larger than ever contemplated, and the demand for unprecedented quantities of matériel showed the absolute necessity of providing centralised direction of mass war production. The Great War completely upset normal industrial conditions. Preparing this history of the Ministry of Munitions was started during the War itself. It was felt that consulting the officials concerned whilst they were still in post was vital, particularly as many such posts were temporary, and while the questions with which the history would deal were vividly present in their minds. This volume contains information concerning: * Labour Supply July-December 1915 * Labour Regulations and the Munitions of War (Amendment) Act 1916 * The Limitation of Recruiting * The Progress of Dilution

Download or read book The British Aircraft Industry during the First World War written by Tim Jenkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Tim Jenkins examines the factory worker poisonings and suspect government procurement procedures that resulted in Allied success in the air during First World War. The early development of aircraft during World War I was an important yet dangerous part of the war effort seen in the First World War and although many descriptions of daring aerial combat have been written, the risk to those involved in the manufacture of such machines remains less well known. Tetrachlorethane, a poisonous solvent contained in aircraft dope, was responsible for a number of civilian deaths in aircraft factories and although the British knew the substance to be lethal, they were much slower than their American and German counterparts in sourcing alternatives. In this groundbreaking book, Tim Jenkins explores the use of Tetrachlorethan and brings to light the concerns and warnings voiced by the international medical profession. His examination considers the government's reasons for its use of the poisonous solvent to create a compelling yet scholarly account which takes in corruption, negligence and wartime manufacture. This book will be vital to scholars studying military production during the First World War.
