This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Protestant Church The present appears to be the proper time to pre sent our fellowship, and the christian public, with a history OF the methodist protestant church. The brethren best acquainted with the origin and pro gress of our denomination are becoming advanced in life, and in a little while 'will pass Off the stage of action. Some have already gone. The materials also, essential to a standard work are disappearing, so that in a few years hence, the historian would find it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the necessary data for the preparation and completion of a correct history of our Church. Book A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines History and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines History and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint written by John Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines, History, and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church This little volume claims no originality of thought. It is an humble attempt to collect and arrange a brief and simple Outline Of the principal doctrines of the Methodist Protestant Church, as the author learned them from the fathers and the doctrinal standards recognized by the denomination; together with some Of the leading facts connected with the history Of Methodism and Of the Methodist Protestant Church; and a full and complete view of the polity or system of government adopted by the Church. When a person gets a clear outline of any subject, it greatly assists him in Obtaining a fuller and more comprehensive view of it in detail. Such an out line, except as it relates to the polity Of the Church, is all that is contemplated here. It is presumed that even this brief view will be valuable to members Of the Church who may not care to extend their investigations further, and that it will be useful in giving those who have no knowledge of our Church, a pretty correct idea of its doctrinal views, its origin and present condition, and its republican system of church government. The author can not but think that it will also be useful to young men entering the ministry in our Church, and convenient for even Older ones. Book History of Methodist Reform Synoptical of General Methodism 1703 to 1898 Vol 1

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Methodist Reform, Synoptical of General Methodism, 1703 to 1898, Vol. 1: With Special and Comprehensive Reference to Its Most Salient Exhibition in the History of the Methodist Protestant Church Methodist literature without recourse to historians and mono graphists whose coloring is unfavorable to liberal views. As common property it is, therefore, appropriated for information as to the rise and progress of doctrinal Methodism and its spiritual agencies, called means of grace, touching which perfect unity has been preserved among our coreligionists the wide world over; as well as for contrast of governmental methods, equal prosperity attending diverse polities, and thus demonstrating that it was primarily due, not to any particular system, but to the doctrines and means of grace formulated by the Wesleys out of the Scrip tures and the needs of the period. As collateral to this method and an irrefragable corollary from the facts Of history, one of the fundamentals of this work is submitted as proven; to wit, that the dominant system on either shore of the Atlantic is responsible directly or indirectly for all the divisions of Metho dism, and that in consequence organic unity is an impossibility, even if it could be shown politic, until the divisive elements in the dominating systems are eliminated. These reasons must be the author's plea for occupying the entire first volume in what is really a preparation for the History of the Methodist Protestant Church. No apology is therefore offered for the extended space given to the vindication of the two men who have been most vilified and misrepresented, - Dr. White head of the Wesleyan Methodists and James o'kelly of the Asburyan Methodists. In both cases much new information is furnished; and while no effort is made to condone their errors of temperament and judgment, earnest, and it is believed success ful, effort is made to rescue their memories from unmerited Obloquy. It will also be discovered that nowhere in current Methodist history can such a running biography of Francis Asbury be found, portraying every side of his wonderful character and meting out with an even hand the merits and demerits of an unique system, of which he was the father, in emulation Of the methods of John Wesley, the founder of it. Biographically it is believed that valuable new information is furnished, and fuller extracts made from Asbury's Journal than has been essayed by any other historiographer. Book A History of Methodism in the United States Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Methodism in the United States Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by James M. Buckley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Book History of the Woman s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Woman s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint written by M. A. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Protestant Church "The true history of any great movement is the history of the men and women who were leaders in it." In the following pages the purpose has been to give a consecutive account of the rise and growth of an organization which has done much toward uniting and cementing the thoughts and purposes of the Christian women of the church in efforts for evangelization in the "regions beyond." This record of events and persons was written in answer to numerous inquiries for information concerning the Society's work, and which inquiries prompted the author to a desire to collect the facts which enter into its history while the active participants were still living and to preserve them in permanent form. The greater part of this record was written while the author was living in Pittsburg, Pa., and associated with the originators of the movement. To her it is far from being a satisfactory record and doubtless it will prove so to others. Some will look in vain, perhaps, for a recognition of work in which they faithfully bore a part, and may find, instead, a record of events which they may deem unworthy of notice. But withal there has been a conscientious effort made to transcribe the record faithfully, and with the earnest desire that this little volume may be kindly received and be a benefit to the Society under whose direction it has been completed, it is herewith submitted by The Author. Book Protestantism in Michigan

Download or read book Protestantism in Michigan written by Elijah H. Pilcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protestantism in Michigan: Being a Special History of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Incidentally of Other Denominations It is now over twenty years since the idea was entertained by me of writing a History of the introduction and growth of Methodism in this State, and I began to make preparations to do so. I thought I had rare opportunities for such a work, being personally acquainted with the first five persons who made a profession of a Christian experience, and who, with two others, constituted the first Christian Protestant Church in Michigan; and, also, being personally and well acquainted with the minister who was sent here in 1815 - the first after the War of 1812. From these persons the lack of documentary statement was supplied. These persons are all deceased now. Having come into Michigan in 1830, and having been extensively connected with the work at an early day, added to my means of presenting facts, I have continued this work, with various interruptions, to the present day. No one who has never undertaken such a task can form any conception of the difficulty of obtaining accurate information. I might have had this work ready years ago had it not been for a desire to be accurate. I myself have, from time to time, published short sketches, some of which contained errors. This work contains the latest and most accurate information that I have been able to obtain; and if there should, in any case, be found a discrepancy between any of those sketches and this work, this is to be the authority.
