Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time The Author must add, that, although the Sacred Records of the Jews have been wonderfully, he cannot suppose that they have been miraculously. Preserved; so as to be exempt from those sligh accidental corruptions, or interpolations, whi writings, so far the oldest in the world, could no well have escaped. Much allowance must also be made for the essentially poetic spirit, and for the Oriental forms of speech, which pervade so large a portion of the Old Testament. Book excerpt: A landmark work of Jewish history and a worldwide phenomenon when it was first published, this masterpiece of Jewish history was translated in multiple languages and instantly become the de facto standard in the field. German academic HEINRICH GRAETZ (1817-1891) brings a sympathetic Jewish perspective to the story of his own people, offering readers today an affectionate, passionate history, not a detached, clinical one. Backed by impeccable scholarship and originally published in German across 11 volumes between 1853 and 1875, this six-volume English-language edition was abridged under the direction of the author, and brought to American readers by the Jewish Publication Society of America in 1891. It remains an important work of the study of the Jewish religion and people to this day. Volume I, subtitled From the Earliest Period to the Death of Simon the Maccabee (135 B.C.E), begins with the earliest inhabitants of Canaan, hereditary law, and the exodus from Egypt, and continues through the Judean colonies in Egypt, the overthrow of the Acra and the Hellenists, and the assassination of Simon.

This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus, Vol. 1 The state of the sources of information at our disposal makes it impossible for us to follow step by step the inner development of the people in connection with each particular institution that comes under consideration. We are therefore under the necessity of appending to the outline of the political history a description of the inner condition of the people in a separate division. The political history falls into two main periods: the period of independence, and the period of the Roman domination. In reference to the internal conditions, the following points should be kept prominently in mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of the Jews Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Jews Classic Reprint written by Gotthard Deutsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 IT is a reconstruction of the Manual of the History of New Testament Times which here appears under another title. I believe that this new title expresses more plainly and correctly than the old title the actual contents of the book For in fact, whether in its former or present state, it does not profess to be more than a History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ, to the exclusion of the state of the heathen world. I could not decide on admitting the latter, because the selection to be made must have been an arbitrary one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Jews, Vol. 1 It is a matter of especial satisfaction to me that my work, "The History of the Jews, from the Earliest Times to the Present Day," should be rendered accessible to the English reading public in a compact form and by means of an adequate translation; for in countries where English is spoken, books are not only bought, bound, and placed in libraries, but are also read, taken to heart, and acted upon. It is therefore to be expected that the English-speaking people, which has never disregarded but has at all times recognised and appreciated the peculiar character of the Jewish race, will feel an increased sympathy for it, on reading the alternations of its sublime and tragical history. English readers, to whom the forefathers of the Jews of to-day - the patriarchs, heroes, and men of God - are familiar characters, will the better understand the miracle which is exhibited in the history of the Jews during three thousand years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, Vol. 3 of 3 The contest raged more and more fiercely - for the abundant stores Within the Temple so un spariiigly supplied the few adherents of Eleazar, that, in their drunkenness, they would occasionally sally out against John. When these attacks took place, John stood on the defensive; from the outer porticoes repelled Simon, and with his engines within harassed Eleazar. When the drunken or overwearied troops of Eleazar gave him repose, he would sally forth against Simon, and waste the city. Simon in his turn would drive him back; and thus the space around the Temple became a mass of rum and desolation; and in these desultory conflicts, the granaries, which, if carefully protected and pru dently husbanded, might have maintained the city in plenty for years, were either wantonly thrown to waste or set on fire by Simon, lest they should be seized by John.
