Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.

Book The Isles of Shoals Through Time

Download or read book The Isles of Shoals Through Time written by Donald Cann and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are relatively few places in the world where time seems to stand still. Incremental changes have occurred on the Isles of Shoals, but they remain hidden beneath the natural and historical beauty that has been their hallmark since the late 1800s. Old Shoalers such as "Uncle" Oscar Laighton and the famed poet, Celia Thaxter, would still recognize the place today, from the grandeur of the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island and the wilds of Duck Island, to the stoicism of duty-bound White Island Lighthouse. The Isles of Shoals Through Time is a visual journey to this offshore haven, a reflection of summers past and a prediction of summers yet to come. Stepping off the boat at Star, we wander past cottages and monuments. On Appledore Island we witness the rugged, natural beauty that attracted artists of all types. As we cruise through the islands as the sun sets on the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines, we are reminded why visitors return year after year to this timeless place.

Book The Isles of Shoals in the Age of Sail

Download or read book The Isles of Shoals in the Age of Sail written by Russell M. Lawson and published by Brief History. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off the picturesque shoreline of New Hampshire and Maine lie eight islands collectively known as the Isles of Shoals. Since the famous English explorer John Smith first set foot on them in 1614, the Isles of Shoals have experienced numerous changes. The once thriving fishing communities suffered many hard years before and after the American Revolution. Since the 1800s, the Isles of Shoals have been revived as a place where travelers, artists and writers can find inspiration and relaxation. The austere beauty of the rocky shores has influenced such notable figures as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Childe Hassam, Sarah Orne Jewett and the poet laureate of the islands, Celia Laighton Thaxter, as well as lesser-known fishers and fishwives, sailors and visitors of the past and present. In this volume, Russell M. Lawson has evoked the fascinating history of the islands, from their discovery to the end of the nineteenth century. It is a must-read for all Shoalers who, like the hardy mariners and inspired artists of the past, follow the call of the sea to the Isles of Shoals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isles of Shoals: An Historical Sketch Since the original edition of this little work was published, important changes have occurred at the Shoals. Another of those summer palaces, replete with every convenience and elegance, has arisen on these barren rocks another steamer brings daily still other swarms of pleasure-seekers and invalids from all parts of the country to these salubrious islets. The Shoals have become the most frequented, and perhaps the most fashionable summer resort in New England. The circle of readers has thus been so widely enlarged, that we find ourselves called upon to issue another edition, in answer to a larger demand than we had anticipated. In this second edition, we have thought fit, in some parts, to enlarge the original text of our Monograph, wherever the new matter seemed likely to be inter esting or had the merit of novelty.
