Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Format: Six Volumes (slipcased in pairs) Sold only as set. The Parliament which sat in Dublin from 1692-1800 was the last Irish elected assembly to represent the whole of the island. The principal issues to emerge during the time of the Irish Parliament—the Penal Code, legislative independence, the 1798 rebellion and the passing of the Act of Union of 1800—were not only crucial in themselves but continue to influence our understanding of Irish history over the last 300 years. The Parliament played a vital role in developing the nature and character of 18th-century Irish society. Among the "firsts" it can claim are the Newry Canal, the first commercial waterway in the British Isles, and the first maternity hospital, the Rotunda in Dublin, in 1745. Its development of the roads network, fairs and markets, education, banking and commerce and, most crucially perhaps, the linen industry, created by 1800 a vibrant and expanding economy and population. It is entirely fitting that the recent bicentenary of the Act of Union should be marked by the eagerly awaited availability of History of the Irish Parliament 1692-1800, the outcome of decades of dedicated research. The information amassed will be presented in a format that will make this invaluable reference work accessible to academic and local historians and genealogists alike. This Publication Includes: Surveys and Statutes volume which classifies the statutes relating to the Constitution, education, local government, law and order, Parliament, religion, manufacturing and employment and, of course, the land. (1 volume). Constituency Histories of the 300 parliamentary county, borough and university seats. (1 volume). Biographical Studies of the 2,300 MPs who sat 1692-1800, Family names and connection, their residences, titles, marriage, pensions, careers and voting records are all meticulously recorded and presented (4 volumes).

Book MPs in Dublin

Download or read book MPs in Dublin written by E. M. Johnston-Liik and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Parliament met for the first time on June 18, 1264 at Castledermott and for the last time in the Parliament House, Dublin, on August 2, 1800. It had lasted for over 500 years, and from 1707 it was the only parliament in the British Empire with the medieval structure of King (represented by the Lord Lieutenant), Lords and Commons. Like the English/British parliament it only met regularly from the end of the 17th century. In 1692 Ireland had a minimal infrastructure; by 1800 it had become recognisable as the country in whose history and culture there is a continuing and irresistible tide of interest worldwide. Since its publication, "History of the Irish Parliament "has acquired an already legendary status. This companion volume looks at Irish society and the personal concerns which influenced the MPs. This volume will form a valuable reference work in addition and complementary to the "History of the Irish Parliament." The six-volume "History of the Irish Parliament 1692-1800" was published in 2002. The online resource is available at www.historyoftheirishparliament.com.

  • Author : Gustave de Beaumont
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-01
  • ISBN : 0674031113
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book Ireland written by Gustave de Beaumont and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paralleling his friend Alexis de Tocqueville's visit to America, Gustave de Beaumont traveled through Ireland in the mid-1830s to observe its people and society. In Ireland, he chronicles the history of the Irish and offers up a national portrait on the eve of the Great Famine. Published to acclaim in France, Ireland remained in print there until 1914. The English edition, translated by William Cooke Taylor and published in 1839, was not reprinted. In a devastating critique of British policy in Ireland, Beaumont questioned why a government with such enlightened institutions tolerated such oppression. He was scathing in his depiction of the ruinous state of Ireland, noting the desperation of the Catholics, the misery of repeated famines, the unfair landlord system, and the faults of the aristocracy. It was not surprising the Irish were seen as loafers, drunks, and brutes when they had been reduced to living like beasts. Yet Beaumont held out hope that British liberal reforms could heal Ireland's wounds. This rediscovered masterpiece, in a single volume for the first time, reproduces the nineteenth-century Taylor translation and includes an introduction on Beaumont and his world. This volume also presents Beaumont's impassioned preface to the 1863 French edition in which he portrays the appalling effects of the Great Famine. A classic of nineteenth-century political and social commentary, Beaumont's singular portrait offers the compelling immediacy of an eyewitness to history.

Book Partisan Politics Principle and Reform in Parliament and the Constituencies 1689 1880

Download or read book Partisan Politics Principle and Reform in Parliament and the Constituencies 1689 1880 written by Clyve Jones and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays deal with aspects of politics in the age of aristocratic oligarchy from the late 17th to the 19th centuries. They elucidate a precedent that saved the Reform Bill in 1832; treat Britain's efforts to rule 18th-century Ireland, (and surging British patriotism) as real but not extreme; and examine several aspects of parliamentary reform through the courts and by carefully managed rioting.Municipal reform provided a major impetus to the reform of parliament, and when carried enhanced its impact, as this collection shows. However, the book also explores how Corn Law reform in 1846 owed more to the ambitions of some peers and the consciences of others than to a newly-empowered public opinion. Food also played a part in politics as shown by the evolution of the political dinner, examined in the final essay.Published as a special issue of the journal Parliamentary History (24:3)
