Book Nisbet of that Ilk

Download or read book Nisbet of that Ilk written by Robert Chancellor Nesbitt and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nesbitts around the world, whichever of the 44 known ways of spelling the name they may use, will welcome this reprint of their book. The first edition appeared in 1941, in the depths of the war, and was restricted to only 250 copies. It is a tribute to the work that the original publisher, John Murray, was prepared to devote strictly rationed paper to such a specialised book at such a time. The book provides a valuable record of a family that settled in Berwick well over eight centuries ago; of its branches, north and south of the Tweed, and in Canada and the USA.

Book Biographical Encyclopedia of Texas

Download or read book Biographical Encyclopedia of Texas written by Southern Publishing Company and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1880 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biography is not given its rightful place in literature. It has a more intimate relation to History than is assigned by common judgment; for, after all, the life of any nation is written in the lives of those who have shown themselves in some respects superior to their fellows. History is to a great degree but the sum of individual action, and the work of the historian consists in connecting many fragments of personal experience and effort, in such a way as to form a narrative harmonious and instructive. Of no Commonwealth, in ancient or modern times, is it so true as of Texas, that its history can only be thoroughly understood through intimate acquaintance with the lives of those who made the State. A romantic interest clothes the entire theme. In the pioneer days its men were brave, and its daughters were their fit companions and helpmeets. Through all the struggle incident to its progress from a Mexican State to its position in the Federal Union, its sons exhibited many of the noblest traits of character. In the late war, its soldiers won the love of their brethren, while their valor compelled the respect of their foes. In this latter regard the work is of interest, for the reader will remark that space has been allotted to many whose names do not appear in the official reports of either the Confederate or Federal departments. This has been done as simple justice to both the dead and the living.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1974, The Black Douglas is both exciting and informative, is based on fourteenth century chronicles and documents, and is the first full account of Douglas’s eventful and dangerous career up to his celebrated death carrying Bruce's heart into battle against the Moors. James of Douglas, Robert Bruce's friend and lieutenant, was known variously to the English as Black Douglas (after the colour of his hair) and to the Scots as Good Douglas, for his mighty success against the English invader. A baron’s heir but, due to the war, orphaned and beggared in boyhood, Douglas joined Bruce with the object of recovering his heritage. The author shows how he achieved this goal within two years, after a grim period of hunted outlawry, and in doing so found that the trade adopted from necessity had become his calling in life. This volume reveals that he was not only a great fighting man- probably the most professional soldier of his day- but a shrewd and realistic commander whose talents contributed greatly to the eventual triumph of the Scots in the Scottish War of Independence. This is an interesting reference work for students and general readers interested in the history of Scotland.

Book The Whole Harmonium

Download or read book The Whole Harmonium written by Paul Mariani and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “incandescent….redefining biography of a major poet whose reputation continues to ascend” (Booklist, starred review)—Wallace Stevens, perhaps the most important American poet of the twentieth century. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) lived a richly imaginative life that he expressed in his poems. “A biography that is both deliciously readable and profoundly knowledgeable” (Library Journal, starred review), The Whole Harmonium presents Stevens within the living context of his times and as the creator of a poetry that continues to shape how we understand and define ourselves. A lawyer who rose to become an insurance-company vice president, Stevens composed brilliant poems on long walks to work and at other stolen moments. He endured an increasingly unhappy marriage, and yet he had his Dionysian side, reveling in long fishing (and drinking) trips to the sun-drenched tropics of Key West. He was at once both the Connecticut businessman and the hidalgo lover of all things Latin. His first book of poems, Harmonium, published when he was forty-four, drew on his profound understanding of Modernism to create a distinctive and inimitable American idiom. Over time he became acquainted with peers such as Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams, but his personal style remained unique. The complexity of Stevens’s poetry rests on emotional, philosophical, and linguistic tensions that thread their way intricately through his poems, both early and late. And while he can be challenging to understand, Stevens has proven time and again to be one of the most richly rewarding poets to read. Biographer and poet Paul Mariani’s The Whole Harmonium “is an excellent, superb, thrilling story of a mind….unpacking poems in language that is nearly as eloquent as the poet’s, and as clear as faithfulness allows” (The New Yorker).
