Download or read book History of the House of Austria Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint written by William Coxe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the House of Austria, Vol. 3 of 3 Joseph, eldest son of Leopold, was born at Vienna in 1678, and owed his Christian name, which none of his ancestors had ever borne, to a vow made by his father, that if by the intercession of St. Joseph, God would bless him with another son, he should be called Joseph. The young prince gave early signs of an active and aspiring mind, and perhaps no heir of an extensive empire was educated with greater care, or provided with more excellent governors and preceptors. Leopold conferred the charge of governor on Charles Dietrich, prince of Salm, who proved himself worthy of his high office by his zeal in promoting the improvement of his pupil, and by inculcating rational and liberal principles both of religion and policy. Knowing that the Jesuits sacrificed all other considerations to the interests of their society, and sensible that they had abetted the intolerance and persecution which, since the death of Maximilian II. had equally disgraced and disturbed the administration of the Austrian sovereigns, he prevailed on Leopold to exclude their order from all share in the education of his successor. Book History of the House of Austria

Download or read book History of the House of Austria written by Archdeacon Coxe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the House of Austria: From the Accession of Francis I. To the Revolution of 1848; In Continuation of the History The work which forms the greater part of this volume is in some respects a thing unique in literature. Its author, Count Hartig, a Conservative Austrian statesman, honoured by the confidence of his sovereign, professes to expound the causes of the revolution which lately shook the empire to its foundations. In so doing, he criticises the course of the Imperial administration with a freedom unexampled by any public writer of his class and country; for, except during the chaotic times of 1848 and 1849, it has always been a rule with the Austrian Government to discountenance all comments on its own proceedings, whether on the part of friends or opponents. The work thus singularly characterized is executed with great ability, and must always be valued by the political inquirer as an authoritative exposition of the momentous crisis to which it relates, as seen from an Austrian point of view. It produced an extraordinary excitement when first published, and went through several editions with great rapidity. The work has been translated in compliance with the ad ice and desire of a most distinguished personage, and is presented as a valuable appendix to Coxe's "History of the House of Austria," already published in the Standard Library. Prefixed is an original epitome of the history of the empire, embracing the period from the accession of the Emperor Francis I. to the close of the war in Hungary, in 1849. In the compilation of this portion of the volume reference has been made to the best and most recent authorities, both English and foreign.
