We can pay to their memory no better tribute than to dedicate ourselves anew to the great undertaking they began. Will you not each and all help _us in realizing the magnificent ideal of a university which fired the imagination and stirred the heart of that prince of men, Dr. J. M. Gregory, and which was taken up and converted into reality at such a marvelous rate by his successors, Dir. Peabody and Dr. Draper, and the great host of their assistants in the Faculty and among the people of Illinois. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Higher Education of Women: Presented to the Corporation of McGill University, October, 1884 In considering from a practical point of View the provision for the higher education of women, two subjects Specially attract our attention. First, the Means and Methods of Educational Train ing, and Secondly, the Examinations and Distinctions to which education leads. These are no doubt closely connected, since education without any examinations or degrees is deprived of its most valuable tests and stimuli, and since examinations tend to guide the efforts of educators while on the other hand examina tions without adequate means of genuine education become mere inducements to cramming. These two departments of the work may, however, be considered separately, with some advantage in so far as the clearness of our conce tions is concerned. Book Margaret Pearmain Welch 1893 1984

Download or read book Margaret Pearmain Welch 1893 1984 written by Elizabeth F. Fideler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a bygone era when twentieth-century Proper Bostonians mixed Beacon Hill formalities with countryside pleasures, Margaret Pearmain Welch (1893-1984) defied the mores of her social set and got away with it. She was the epitome of everything expected and much that was scandalous. Known as a debutante, dancer, world traveler, and hostess, she was also an indefatigable activist, writer, lecturer, lobbyist, fundraiser, and opinion shaper--grande dame as well as proverbial little old lady in combat boots (footwear more appropriate to confrontation than tennis shoes). A descendant of seventeenth-century dissenter Anne Hutchinson and just as independent, she embraced Quaker ideals of religious tolerance, conscientious objection, and civil liberties, as well as worship without the benefit of clergy. Margaret was the quintessential socialite who established Waltz Evenings in her Louisburg Square drawing room and also the beauty whose marriages and divorces caused ostracism. At the same time, she worked tirelessly on women's suffrage, reproductive rights, world peace, environmental protection, monetary reform, land conservation, and more. As the indomitable matriarch of an extended family and chronicler of its history, her efforts at self-fashioning produced a unique persona, blending insistence on proprieties with a keen awareness of twentieth-century social, cultural, political, and economic shifts.

Book The Higher Education of Woman

Download or read book The Higher Education of Woman written by John Clark Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Education of Woman: An Address Delivered at the Opening of Queen's College, Kingston, Canada, Session 1871-72 But if the fmovemeut Spoken of does not seek to withdraw women from the work of their households, the question will naturally be asked, What is the object at which it aims 'z lt endeavours to accomplish a'rcform in the same direction in which every previous im p1ovement in the re ation of the sexes has pro ceeded, - towards the elevation of woman from a state of real or virtual slavery to man. That is now required is that this tendency of civilization shall be completed by at last ao cording to women perfect equality with men in reference to social position and legal rights. The conscience of Christendom undoubtedly re volts against any explicit subjection of the one sex to the other; and consequently it is only necessary to point out the inequality in the pri vileges accorded to the two sexes, in order to prove the rightfulness of the demand for some reform. Now, there are various ways in which this subject may be approached, as there are various aspects in which this inequal ity of rights is exhibited. The point of view from which the question will be examined at present, is one from which the necessity of some concession to women is peculiarly clear. Book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood

Download or read book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood written by Emily Hamilton-Honey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternating chapters of historical background and literary analysis, this study argues that postbellum series books inspired young women by illustrating the ways in which girls could participate in social change, whether through church societies, benevolent organizations, educational institutions or political groups. By 1900, however, the socialization of series heroines had shifted to the consumer marketplace, where girls could develop personality and taste through their purchases. Both models had benefits: Religious faith and political activism gave young women moral power within their communities; consuming gave them opportunities to indulge individual desires and often to socialize in public without adult oversight. This work adds to the existing scholarship on girls' culture not only by examining the beginnings of series fiction for girls and the models of womanhood it presented but also by tracing the shifting social ideologies of girlhood throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
