Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Greek Revolution, and of the Wars and Campaigns Arising From the Struggles of the Greek Patriots in Emancipating Their Country From the Turkish Yoke, Vol. 1 of 2 Tm; contest betwixt the Greeks and Turks has employed so many pens, that he who now ventures to write on that hackneyed, and appa rently exhausted subject, must begin by explain ing his reasons for travelling over a beaten road, 'to which he cannot hope to attract public curi osity, since it is either satiated by preceding narratives, or drawn away towards more recent and important transactions: these reasons may be summed up in a few words. That moment ary interest, which induced a number of persons hastily to publish what they had seen or heard in Greece, exists no longer; but there is, and ever will be, a grave class of readers loving truth more than novelty, and desirous of becoming acquainted with the exact details of a revolu tion, that must take its place in the history of the world. As yet there is nothing calculated to satisfy their taste, for of the forty authors whom the struggle in Greece has called forth. The assembly ratified everything the president had done, and intrusted him with all the additional power he desired. Only the laws which he approved and recommended were passed. He did not venture to obtain his nomination to the presidency for life, for it would have been imprudent to take so important a step in the settlement of the government of Greece without the previous consent of the three allied powers. But he obtained an act of the assembly, declaring that the decisions of the conferences of London should not be held to be binding on Greece until they were ratified by the Greek legislature.1 He trusted to his own diplomatic skill for rendering this law subservient to his schemes concerning the sovereignty of Greece. The Panhellenion was replaced by a senate, but the organisation of this senate was left by the assembly entirely in the hands of the president. The senate was then completed by the addition of six mem-A. D....

Account of Ibrahim's conference with the Deputies of Ote Garrison of Navarin. The Greek captains (Makriyani, Salavankos, and Karapavlos) waited upon the Pasha; Makriyani was spokesman, and as he did not understand Turkish, the following conversation was carried on through an interpreter: --Ibrahim (looking at Makriyani) said," Wherefore come you here?" M. "To surrender the castle." I. " What is your native country?" M. " Roumelia; my companions are Moreotes." I. "Answer truly the questions I am about to ask you: from what part of Roumelia do you come?" M. "From Lidoriki." I. " Where have you been until now?" M. "With Ali Pasha."--(This was false.) I. "What did you with him?" M. (Pronouncing the name of Ali Pasha with a deep sigh)--" I was one of his body guards." I. " And why did you leave him?" M. " They slew him, and wanted to kill us." I. " His highness wishes you to remain with him." M. "I shall do so with pleasure; as they have slain my Pasha, I shall be glad to go to Egypt." I. "When will you come?" M. " At present I am here as a deputy from the garrison, to treat on the business of the castle; when that is finished, and we march out, and I shall have received my pay, and sent my family (which I dare not leave behind me) in safety to Egypt, I will follow." I. " When you come out, write me a letter, and I will insure your safety at my outposts." M. " Very well, my Pasha I now let us talk on the business that brought me here; what is it you demand of us?" I. " The fort." M. " Do you know the reason of our...
