Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built in Baltimore in 1797 under orders from President George Washington, USS Constellation is one of America's first warships, and according to this new study, remains the nation's oldest surviving warship. With the book's publication, the author believes he has put to rest a decades-old controversy among naval historians, the U.S. Navy, local governments, and various historic ship foundations. He argues that though greatly modified since built by David Stodder, the ship now berthed in Baltimore's Inner Harbor is indeed the original Constellation. Tracing her history from frigate to sloop of war, Footner examines Constellation's exciting operational history and four rebuilds, including her last in 1853, when John Lenthall, the Navy's chief constructor, redesigned her extensively.

This book was released on 2008-03-17 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A fluent, intelligent history...give[s] the reader a feel for the human quirks and harsh demands of life at sea."—New York Times Book Review Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military became the most divisive issue facing the new government. The founders—particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams—debated fiercely. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect from pirates or drain the treasury and provoke hostility? Britain alone had hundreds of powerful warships. From the decision to build six heavy frigates, through the cliff-hanger campaign against Tripoli, to the war that shook the world in 1812, Ian W. Toll tells this grand tale with the political insight of Founding Brothers and the narrative flair of Patrick O'Brian.

Book excerpt: This biography details the life of Thomas Truxtun, one of the first six captains appointed by George Washington to the U.S. Navy. Author Eugene Ferguson recounts Truxtun’s debut as a teen merchant seaman, his first command, and his role as a privateer during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Truxton entered the China trade, making four voyages to the Far East. France then figures prominently in Truxton’s career. Truxton commanded the ship that returned Benjamin Franklin to America after his ambassadorship to France. Truxton also captained the ship Constellation from her launch in 1797 to her return in 1800 from the undeclared naval war with France. Ferguson ends his account with Truxton’s resignation (in 1802) over professional and personal matters.

Book excerpt: Myers relates the illustrious history of our nation's last all-sail warship. He describes her original construction and launch in 1797 and early victories against the French frigate Insurgente and Barbary Coast pirates. He then details the mid-18th-century "repair" that transformed the ship into the "second" Constellation, a vessel that roamed the Atlantic to interdict the slave trade, saw Civil War action, and was finally used for training officers. The author also explains how the Constellation was operated and how its sailors were trained, and sums up the various rebuilding efforts that culminated in restoring her to her 1854 condition and her 1999 return to Baltimore Harbor. He includes many lengthy primary-source quotes, such as an account of the Constellation's 1860 encounter with a slave vessel and the specific instructions for sailors who handled gunpowder. There are numerous period illustrations and photos of the vessel and those who served on her as well as an extensive bibliography with primary and secondary sources and Web sites.

Book American Heavy Frigates 1794 1826

Download or read book American Heavy Frigates 1794 1826 written by Mark Lardas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1805 the 44-gun frigate was probably viewed as a failed experiment whilst the 38-gun frigate was viewed as the vessel of the future. Ten years later every navy was building 44-gun frigates and today it is viewed as the symbol of the Napoleonic-era cruiser. This remarkable transformation resulted from the performance of three ships – the Constitution, United States, and President – 44-gun frigates built for the United States Navy between 1794 and 1799. Their victories in the naval War of 1812, as well as their performance against the Barbary Pirates, caught the imagination of the world – and spurred all navies into re-examining the class.
