Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and of the Hibernian Society for the Relief of Emigrants From Ireland: March 17, 1771 March 17, 1892 To give an idea of some of the work performed, it will suffice to mention the fact that in order to cover the period from 1790 to 1814, for which period the minute books of the Society are missing, every newspaper published in Philadelphia during that period was collated. Issue by issue, and whatever pertained to the Hibernian Society care. Fully copied. Besides all these sources of information, the descendants, relatives; or acquaintances of deceased members have been either interviewed or corresponded with wherever it was possible, and a large mass of facts accumulated. The correspondence alone in this department amounted to several thousand letters and cards. As to living mem bers, blanks were sent to them, requesting data for sketches, and, with but few exceptions, these blanks were returned filled. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the significant connections between the Quaker community and the abolitionist cause in America. The case studies that make up the collection mainly focus on the greater Philadelphia area, a hotbed of the abolitionist movement and the location of the first American abolition society founded in 1775. Despite the importance of Quakers to the abolitionist movement, their significance has been largely overlooked in the existing historiography. These studies will be of interest to scholars of slavery and abolition, religious history, Atlantic studies and American social and political history.

Book excerpt: Fifty-seven Irish immigrant laborers arrived in the port of Philadelphia in June 1832 to work on Pennsylvania's Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. They all perished within six weeks. Contractor Philip Duffy hired them to work a stretch of track in rural Chester County known as Duffy's Cut. For more than 180 years, the railroad maintained that cholera was to blame and kept the historical record under lock and key. In a harrowing modern-day excavation of their mass grave, a group of academics and volunteers found evidence some of the laborers were murdered. Authors and research leaders Dr. William E. Watson and Dr. J. Francis Watson reveal the tragedy, mystery and discovery of what really happened at Duffy's Cut.
