Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 4 of 4 If we once more survey the state of European politics in July 1794, we see the military power of France decidedly in the ascendant, and a general exhaustion, and disinclination for war, on the part of the allied Powers. England alone was victorious at sea, and still resolved to continue the contest. Prussia had placed her Rhine Army at the disposal of the British Government, but otherwise directed all her hopes and efforts towards the war in Poland. Holland, the petty German sovereigns, Naples and Spain, wished for nothing so eagerly as peace - peace at almost any price. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 4 of 4 Although it might be, and indeed in this case was proved to be, a momentous thing for a monarch to journey a few miles from one royal palace to another, it would not, on the face of it, seem that this shift of lodgings was in itself a very difficult matter. And yet, curiously enough, at the time when it took place the gravity of the business, its historical importance, its tragedy and its pathos, seemed less conspicuous, at least to the official eye and mind, than the difficulty, the trouble, and the worry of the undertaking. For the King of France to come from his palace at Versailles to his palace at Paris meant an amount of perturbation, of anxiety, of a despair touching the extreme of comedy, of which few except those immediately concerned had any conception. This eminent republican was a member of the frightful Committee of Public 'safety, but it has been said in his defence, observes a competent authority, that he did not meddle with in atrocities, limiting himself entirely to the war department, for which he thawed so much. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 Very different was the activity and success of their oppo nents, the Democrats. The plan of subjecting all the pro perty and civilisation of France to their will, which they had first promulgated after the l0th of August, and again during the month of December, was now to be brought into full operation by the new ascendancy which this party had acquired through the trial and execution of the king. As the middle class in Paris kept entirely aloof from politics, the sectional assemblies were only attended by a handful of proletaries, who commenced their sittings late in the evening after work hours, and faithfully represented that sovereignty of the people, whose dicta - according. To the doctrine of the J acobins were to be a binding law on the Convention. Care was taken that there should never be any want of orators or exciting themes of declamation: discussions were carried on till late in the night, on the worthlessness of the ministry and the Gironde - ou the intrigues of the Emigres, and the traitors at home - and above all, on the starvation of the poor, the hard-heartedness of the rich, and the means of extermin ating usurers and monopolists. As many articles were made dear by the stagnation of trade and the mass of as signats, there was reason enough for complaint; and the exasperation was increased by the thought that goods existed in plenty, and that they only had a higher price put on them by the merchants, or were altogether withdrawn from the market, in consequence of the uncertain value of the paper money. And thus a fresh outcry was raised against their grinding selfishness and it was again demanded that the State should decree low and fixed prices, and punish those who refused to sell their goods. The word was passed from section to section; wherever any opposition showed itself it was immediately suppressed by a number of resolute Federes; and on the 12th of February the first of those storm petitions - which were so terribly to characterize the year. 1793 - was presented to the Convention. Commissioners of the sections and the Federes, warmly supported by Marat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4: Translated From the Third Edition of the Original German Work The Work of Professor von Sybel on the History of the French Revolution enjoys so high a reputation in Germany that the Translator considers it unnecessary to make any apology for presenting it to the English Public. It has long been considered by the ablest historical critics to contain the most impartial account of that great Historical Drama, which is still unrolling before our eyes, and of which we have not yet seen the catastrophe. If the Author needed any justification for re-opening a subject of such universal interest, it would be found in the long list of documents contained in the following preface, all of which were first consulted by him, and most of them by him alone. His preliminary remarks are sufficient to show how justly he estimates the magnitude of the task he has undertaken, and with what patience, diligence, and good fortune, he has collected the great amount of fresh materials indispensable to its due performance; but only a perusal of the work itself will enable the reader to appreciate the far higher qualities of the genuine historian - the power of weighing evidence, and the impartiality of the just and fearless judge. 'I sought, ' he says, 'that stately city of which I had read such wonderful accounts. I found but high and squalid tenements, long and ludicrously narrow streets, poor wretches every were cloth the rags, a crowed of well-night naked children; I beheld a dense population, and appalling poverty. I asked my father if that was indeed Paris; he answered coldly that it was certainly not the finest quarter; on the morrow we should have time to see another.'These sentence, almost the opening sentence of the once renowned romance of 'Faublas, ' make a strangely appropriate text for any study of or any speculation upon the French Revolution.
