This was one of the most important works done by the regiment in all its battle experiences, and materially aided in the successful outcome of this phase of the great Argonne Offensive. By the 7th of October the advance had progressed so well that the guns of the I 15th were practically out of range, and the light regiments, too, were unable to follow it up because of loss of horses. It was, therefore, ordered that the entire brigade should move to what was considered a quiet sector to the southest of Verdun, to be rested and re-equipped with horses, men and material before being again thrown back into the thick of the big battle. In the work of the provisional battalion in the forward positions in the Argonne Offensive, credit is due to all of the batteries of the regiment, as the men were rotated by batteries so that all might share in the creditable work done by the regiment. The second day of the fighting, September 27th, while the regimental command post was still at Verrieres Farm, the observation balloons had moved up near. From the entrance of the dugout used by the regimental headquarters six ballons could be seen. Shortly after noon a German plane shot down two in quick succession, one of them almost directly over the regimental P. C. Of the three officers in the two balloons, two escaped in their pharachutes, the other losing his life by the burning of his. One of the officers landed near the command post and proved to be Lieut. Herbert B. Hudnut, who had joined the regiment at Sevier and had transferred to the air service after arriving in France as a balloon observer. He was uninjured except for a scratch across the bridge of his nose, and exhibited a coolness that won the admiration of all his old friends...

Book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918

Download or read book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918 written by George Catlett Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.

Book Action Action Action

Download or read book Action Action Action written by Nicholas Floyd and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred and fifty years ago, on 1st August 1871, the Colony of New South Wales raised its first permanent Battery, known as the New South Wales Artillery. This battery complemented existing colonial volunteer batteries. The previous year, the last British forces had departed for England, leaving the young, dynamic colonies across Australia to uphold their own defences. This occasion marked the origins of the substantive, permanent presence of professional Australian artillery soldiers – a presence that endures to this day as the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. In the years that have followed, Australian Gunners have served their country in war and in peace; abroad, and in the defence of their homeland, with honour and dedication, and will continue to do so into the future. 1st August 2021 marked a century and a half of unbroken dedication in the service of our community and the Nation by Australia’s Gunners – Volunteer, Militia, Reserve, Permanent and Regular; at home, and in far-off lands; defending assaults from the sea, in the sky, and on land; and advising, defending and supporting our comrades-in-arms through summoning and orchestrating devastating fires and effects that are accurate, responsive, dependable & joint. These are, and will remain, the tenets of the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery in all its forms. This is the story of Australia’s Gunners – so far.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trail of the 61st: A History of the 61st Field Artillery Brigade During the World War, 1917-1919 A few days after the memorandum was issued I was sent to the Camp Hospital Where I was held for 28 days, but the brigade did not leave for home, as I had feared it would, for about two weeks after I had been released from the hospital, and I therefore had the opportunity of doing some effective work after my illness, though not enough to gather all of the information I desired. Had I not been held in the hospital so long I would have been able, I believe, to have secured all of the material desired. Book Seek Strike and Destroy

Download or read book Seek Strike and Destroy written by Christopher Richard Gabel and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventy years that have passed since the tank first appeared, antitank combat has presented one of the greatest challenges in land warfare. Dramatic improvements in tank technology and doctrine over the years have precipitated equally innovative developments in the antitank field. One cycle in this ongoing arms race occurred during the early years of World War II when the U.S. Army sought desperately to find an antidote to the vaunted German blitzkrieg. This Leavenworth Paper analyzes the origins of the tank destroyer concept, evaluates the doctrine and equipment with which tank destroyer units fought, and assesses the effectiveness of the tank destroyer in battle.
