Excerpt: ...served until mustered out November 9, 1898. James E. Payne. Frank B. Pauley. Captain Charles T. O'Brien. Company A. Charles Francis O'Brien was born in Worcester, Mass., November 14, 1867, and was educated in the public schools of that city. In September, 1883, he removed to Kansas City and was employed in a clothing store until the following year, when he secured a position as clerk in Bradstreet's Commercial Agency. Applying himself here with notable care and industry he soon raised himself to the place of chief clerk. In 1885, fired with the hope of acquiring wealth through the great real estate boom that was then setting ninety per cent of Kansas City wild, he gave up his situation with Bradstreets and associated himself with Mr. George Law, subsequently engaging in the real estate business for himself. When the collapse came he was strictly in it, but pulled through without material loss. In 1892 he engaged in newspaper work on the Times. In 1893 he severed his connection with that paper and moved to California with his mother and lived near Los Angeles until the Fall of 1896, when he returned to Kansas City, reaching here in October. He easily secured his old position on the Times and was soon advanced to the work of city editor, a place he filled with marked ability. He was thus engaged when war was declared against Spain. As soon as Gen. Moore began the organization of the Fifth Missouri, Mr. O'Brien offered his services and the offer being accepted, commenced enlisting men for a company. When the company was sworn in he was chosen as its Captain. The following day he was assigned to duty as Quartermaster, at that time a very difficult position to fill. But he filled it with his usual ability, and many of the comforts the men...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.

Book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War

Download or read book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th Missouri Infantry distinguished itself as just the type of regiment the Union needed in the Civil War. Hard as nails and loyal to a fault, the men of the "Eagle Brigade" would follow their commanders "into hell if they ordered." They battled two Confederate regiments at Iuka, turned the tide at Battery Robinett at Corinth, assaulted the impossible Stockade Redan at Vicksburg as whole ranks of soldiers were cut down, and broke Hood's line at Nashville. Although the 11th Missouri ranks among the 300 top regiments of the Civil War, little of its history has been formally recorded. This study provides a detailed account of the regiment's four-and-a-half years of outstanding service and a roster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 21st Missouri Regiment Infantry Veteran Volunteers At the close of the war and after their discharge the members of the 21st Missouri Regiment scattered over Missouri and other States of the Union. No effort was made to keep the organization alive until 1888, when T. W. Holman, responding to the whisperings of memory for a sight and hand clasp of the old comrades of '61-'66, on his own responsibility published a call, in August, 1888, for a meeting of the survivors at Arbela, Mo. The result was a large gathering of the veterans and the organization of the 21st Missouri Infantry Veteran Volunteers Association. From that date to the present time annual meetings have been held. At the meeting in 1896, Messrs. T. W. Holman and N. D. Starr were made Regimental Historians, to compile and perpetuate the history of the regiment. At the next meeting, in 1897, these comrades made a partial report, and at the Edina, Mo., meeting in 1898, submitted the result of their labors in manuscript form. A motion was then made and carried that T. W. Holman continue the labor and revise and prepare the manuscript for publication and have it printed for the use of the Association. In accordance with the foregoing instructions the succeeding pages are respectfully submitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
