Book History of the Expedition Under the Command of Lewis and Clark Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Expedition Under the Command of Lewis and Clark Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint written by Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Expedition Under the Command of Lewis and Clark, Vol. 1 of 4 My commentary relates mainly to geography, ethnology, and natural history; but it is too extensive and diversified to be concisely described, and if it cannot speak for itself, there is nothing to be said about it. I wish that the literal extracts from the codices were more copious than they are; but all books, even such as this one, have necessary limits. The rest Of the new matter in these volumes consists Of a Supplement to Jefierson's Memoir of Lewis, Memoirs Of Clark and of Cass, respectively, a bibliography, a much needed index, this preface, and various illustrations. The modern map was selected as being on about the same scale as Captain Clark's original, thus facilitating comparison Of his with our geography. But as it was not drawn for this work, I am responsible for nothing that appears upon it excepting the red marks I have made to indicate the route. These will be found as accurate as the map permits them to be; but the result is to be taken simply as a diagram. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to talk like an American? According to John Russell Bartlett's 1848 Dictionary of Americanisms, it means indulging in outlandish slang—splendiferous, scrumptious, higgeldy piggedly—and free-and-easy word creation—demoralize, lengthy, gerrymander. American English is more than just vocabulary, though. It's a picturesque way of talking that includes expressions like go the whole hog, and the wild boasts of frontiersman Davy Crockett, who claimed to be "half horse, half alligator, and a touch of the airthquake." Splendiferous Speech explores the main sources of the American vernacular—the expanding western frontier, the bumptious world of politics, and the sensation-filled pages of popular nineteenth-century newspapers. It's a process that started with the earliest English colonists (first word adoption—the Algonquian raccoon) and is still going strong today. Author Rosemarie Ostler takes readers along on the journey as Americans learn to declare linguistic independence and embrace their own brand of speech. For anyone who wonders how we got from the English of King James to the slang of the Internet, it's an exhilarating ride.

Book A Life Wild and Perilous

Download or read book A Life Wild and Perilous written by Robert M. Utley and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the nineteenth century, the mountain men emerged as a small but distinctive group whose knowledge and experience of the trans-Mississippi West extended the national consciousness to continental dimensions. Though Lewis and Clark blazed a narrow corridor of geographical reality, the West remained largely terra incognita until trappers and traders--Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzpatrick, Jedediah Smith--opened paths through the snow-choked mountain wilderness. They opened the way west to Fremont and played a major role in the pivotal years of 1845-1848 when Texas was annexed, the Oregon question was decided, and the Mexican War ended with the Southwest and California in American hands, the Pacific Ocean becoming our western boundary.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Expedition Under the Command of Captains Lewis and Clark, Vol. 1 of 3: To the Sources of the Missouri, Across the Rocky Mountains, Down the Columbia River to the Pacific in 1804-6 Though Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence as early as 1534, New France was not founded until the coming in 1603 of Champlain, perhaps the noblest type in the whole impressive series of colonizers that went forth into the world under the banner of the lilies. In resource and courage he was matchless: in imagination he conceived such projects as occupying America with a French empire and even connecting the Pacific with the Atlantic by an Isthmian canal. In temper he seems to have been, moreover, unlike his class in general, sweet and disposed to cooperation. If properly sustained, as has been said, he would have colonized from Quebec to Florida, or westward from the mouth of the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi. After thirty years of heroic striving, how ever, he died in his little fortress at Quebec, the great wilder ness about him as yet scarcely touched by any impress, his fine energy throughout his life crippled and deadened by want of sympathy and support from home. When his life went out it was like the extinction of a torch; and for a See W. Frewen Lord's Lost Empires of the Modern World on this tapic.
