Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Eighty-Third Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers If I were writing this book for the whole world to gaze upon, I should stand greatly in fear of the critics; or I am not an author by profession, and, if I know myself, I never shall be. Literary critics being out of the question then, there are two classes of verbal critics, whom alone I have any occasion to fear. The first consists of those members of the regiment who may take offence because I have not be stowed sufficient attention upon their claims to immortality, which seeming neglect, I can assure them, is without design or malice afore thought on my part. As a general rule, I pre fer not to give my opinion of a man until he is dead; for then I can abuse him without fear of a licking, or praise him without incurring the charge of toadyism. If, therefore, any one of the surviving members of the eighty-third thinks himself aggrieved in this respect, all I have to say is that he should have died sooner. To be frank there are so many men of that regiment, of whose soldierly qualities I have a high opinion, that I have sometimes been uncharitable enough to wish that they had de parted this life upon some glorious field of bat tle, just for the sake of giving me an opportu nity of speaking my mind concerning them. This thing of praising a man while he is still living is a very risky business; for he may do well for a while and then turn out badly in the end. But if he dies, and dies while his fame is upon him, you can safely bestow upon him his inst share of praise; for he cannot then come back to spoil the good report which he has left behind him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Eighty-Seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers: Prepared From Official Records, Diaries, and Other Authentic Sources of Information HE plan of this work is to tell the story of the Eighty seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, from the time it entered the service, in 1861, to the end of the great con fliot for the preservation of the Union. The first chapters de scribe how the regiment was recruited and organized, and how the soldiers went to war. Then follows a mental picture of the daily life and acts of the men, portraying their sturdy courage and devotion to the country and the flag, their experience in camp, on the march, in battle, in the prison pen, and how the returning soldiers were welcomed home. To the comrades of the regiment, it is hoped the work will present a stereoscopic view, a panorama of their career in the army, which will take them back in memory to the time of their early manhood, cause their pulses to thrill, and help them to live over again those eventful years of the past. For the non military reader, the aim has been to make the history interest ing, instructive and entertaining, and show how the soldier of the Civil War served and fought and endured to prevent the dismemberment of the Union. A comprehensive description of all the engagements has not been attempted, but the part taken by the regiment in every skirmish and battle in which it participated, is given in detail, as well as an account of its long marches, during the entire period of its service. The project to prepare and publish the history of the regi ment originated at the reunion of 1897. It culminated in areality, in 1900, through the enterprise of Captain W. H Lanius, of Company I, whose earnest support and intelligent judgment made it possible for the appearance of the work. Book History of the Seventy Eighth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Seventy Eighth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Classic Reprint written by J. T. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Seventy-Eighth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry The 78th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers comprises two different organizations. The first organization was mustered into the United States Service October 12, 1861, and was mustered out November 4, 1864. The connection between the two organizations is two-fold. First, the new organization succeeded to the name and number, 78th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers. Second, the men who served in the first organization, and whose term of service had not expired when the old regiment was mustered out, and the men of the old regiment who had re-enlisted were transferred to Companies A and B of the new regiment, and comprised nearly the whole of these two companies in the new organization. To avoid confusion, we have made two distinct rolls, and the names of the men who served in both organizations will appear in both rolls, and the date of muster will show how far each one participated in the services and honors of each organization. If this Regimental History were designed only for surviving comrades an outline sketch would be sufficient, and each comrade could, from the store-house of his own memory, fill up the gaps; but, being for all comrades, their descendants and the people of the State, we deem it wise to explain military terms and give sketches of everyday camp life. If this history were written with special regard for literary beauty, or, as a specimen of interesting narrative, we could blend fact and fiction in such a way as to make it more interesting to our readers; but, being designed for an accurate record of facts, all fiction, however interesting, must be excluded. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First Battalion Pennsylvania Six Months Volunteers and 187th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry: Six Months and Three Years Service, Civil War, 1863-1865 This volume contains the history of the One Hundred and Eighty-seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. This work needs no apology. It contains no wonderful exploit; but a simple story of the service of the Regiment, which has been written with but one end in view, that is to do justice to all. No doubt, many other Regiments performed more brilliant service; but none bore more faithful allegiance to the great cause of the Constitution and the Union. In the qualities that make good soldiers - discipline, respect for superiors, perfection in drill, cleanliness, steadiness under fire, freedom from pillage, and manly endurance, under all the trying vicissitudes of war - the men of the 187th Pennsylvania Regiment had no superiors. This work has been made up from the diaries of the following members of the Regiment: Captain John E. Reilly, Lieutenant Samuel C. Ilgenfritz and Frederick K. Ployer, and from the personal recollections of the writer. We have also consulted Bates' History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers and the History of the 150th Regiment P. V., which was attached to the same Brigade. We are also under obligation to Major George W. Merrick, Lieutenant Frank J. Deemer and Lieutenant Jonathan J. Jessup for valuable assistance.
