I desire to thank them all most heartily; and if any of them turn from this volume with a feeling of a disappointment, it is no more than I have done very many times during its preparations, on account of the disparity between my design and the actual performance. The map of the Cheat Mountain region was prepared expressly for this work by Mr. George B. Nicholson (to whom my warmest thanks are due for great and constant assistance, in many different ways), and is, I believe, the only one extant that is worth the trouble of referring to, in connection with the history of the campaign there in the fall of 1861. I regret that it has been impossible, from pecuniary considerations, to introduce more maps, as at one time I hoped that I should be justified in doing; but this is of the less consequence, as good maps of Kentucky, Tennessee, etc., can readily be procured almost anywhere.
