Above forty years ago, passing by the open door of the Catholic church then standing in Ann Street, New York, and seeing its interior draped in black on the morning of Good Friday, I took a proffered seat near the chancel, to behold the scenes never before nor since witnessed. The movements, the prayers in Latin, the smoking incense, the melodies, the candles, the bowings, and the chancel performances, were closely observed without being well understood. But the sermon which followed was in plain Saxon, glorifying the wood of the cross, which the preacher said " ought to be worshipped." I was surprised, for the Latins deny their worship of idols, and I, charitably believing it, was astonished at the preacher's language in presence of the thronged house. It seemed to me unguarded, and rashly to place a weapon in their enemy's hands. The preacher proceeded, however, in full earnest, to show and to urge the reasonableness, and to enforce the duty, of worshipping the mood of the cross! First, Because it was miraculously preserved, and found with the crosses of the two thieves, after having lain buried in the earth for three hundred years nearly. Secondly, Because when found, it was distinguished from the crosses of the two thieves by the miracles it wrought, while the crosses of the thieves wrought none. (The father of this quite overreached himself by finding the crosses of the two thieves.) Thirdly, Because the wood of the true cross multiplied itself for distribution over the whole world without diminution or loss of the original wood. A This emphatic and logical preaching was next practically illustrated before all eyes. For the preacher, officiating clergy, and clerks within the chancel, first approached singly in...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the symbol of the cross has had an attraction for the author ever since, as an enquiring youth, he found himself unable to obtain satisfactory answers to four questions concerning the same which presented themselves to his mind. Pursuing these matters for himself, the author eventually found that even before our era the cross was venerated by many as the symbol of Life; though our works of reference seldom mention this fact, and never do it justice. He moreover discovered that no one has ever written a complete history of the symbol, showing the possibility that the stauros or post to which Jesus was affixed was not cross-shaped, and the certainty that, in any case, what eventually became the symbol of our faith owed some of its prestige as a Christian symbol of Victory and Life to the position it occupied in pre-Christian days. The author has therefore, in the hope of drawing attention to the subject, incorporated the results of his researches in the present book.

Book Roman Crucifixion and the Death of Jesus

Download or read book Roman Crucifixion and the Death of Jesus written by Woodrow Michael Kroll and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman practice of crucifixion was so abhorrent that even the Romans didn’t talk about it. Yet their government practiced crucifixion for centuries. What drew the crowds to the killing fields to watch people die such torturous deaths? What enabled those elite soldiers in the Roman killing squads to crucify their victims with the precision and skill of a hospital surgeon? These and many other questions are answered in this book. Of the thousands of people who fell victim to “the most pitiable of deaths,” one is much better known than all the others—Jesus of Nazareth. Most Christians know something of Jesus’ crucifixion because of the Gospel narratives, but to enhance our appreciation of the Savior’s death, we benefit by knowing more about Roman crucifixion. Roman Crucifixion and the Death of Jesus provides a deeper understanding of how, where, and why someone could be crucified and helps to inform us of Jesus’ crucifixion. Armed with a better grasp of Roman crucifixion, we can more fully appreciate Jesus’ pain, his purpose, and his prayers from Calvary’s cross.

Book Highlights of Templar History

Download or read book Highlights of Templar History written by William Moseley Brown and published by Book Tree. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Knights Templar is a secret society that has existed for many centuries. Few books have been written about them from an insiders point of view. This book was originally released by the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar, United States of America, after seven years of historical research by an assigned committee. The author, Brown, was a member of that committee and their purpose was to provide Templars with an accurate history of their organization. It was for members only and much of the information is not found elsewhere. We've also added, from another source, their Constitution and Abbreviated By-Laws, out of print for over 100 years, as a service for potential members or for those who desire a better knowledge of the inner workings of the Templars. These two works, combined together, will hopefully shed new light on an interesting and sometimes mysterious organization.
