Book A History of the Council of Trent

Download or read book A History of the Council of Trent written by Theodore Alois Buckley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Council of Trent: Compiled From a Comparison of Various Writers; With a Chronological Summary IN bringing before the public a new sketch of the history of the Council of Trent, I feel that, although the increased study of the fathers and councils of late years has enlarged our opportunities of entering fairly into the merits of theo logical questions, and has, in many instances, substituted fair deductions for prejudged assertion, still, in the, case of this Council, we cannot hope to arrive at new conclusion s. Neverthe less, a greater acquaintance with scholastic technology, a more complete system of critical canons, and a stricter appliance of that system to particular instances, will doubtless help us to discern more safely between truth and error, and, while doing away with conventional prejudices and traditional exaggerations, will make us, if not perfect reasoners on our own side, at least more lenient in considering the views of our opponents. If the pursuit of such literature has been perverted by some into a reason for a reunion with error, we have, at the same time, the assurance that a far greater number have been led to very different conclusions 3 and that, whilst we have learned the real nature of Romanism from its own sources, we have often found the confutation of its tenets in the very writings to which it appeals as the main-spring of their existence - writings which it would fain elevate to the rank of inspired Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Popery: Comprising a Brief History of the Council of Trent, and a Complete View of Roman Catholic Theology Mr. Butler maintains, in his "Book of the Roman Catholic Church," that, "in every religious controversy between Protestants and Roman Catholics, the following rule should be rigidly observed: - 'That no doctrine should be ascribed to the Roman Catholics as a body except such as is an article of their faith." Protestants have no objections to meet their opponents on their own terms. The articles of faith of the Roman Catholic church are to be found in its accredited creeds, catechisms, formularies, and decrees. These received the finishing touch at the council of Trent. The doctrinal decisions of that assembly are held sacred by every Roman Catholic, in every country. In compiling this small volume, the author has aimed to delineate the theological system of the Romish church, as definitively and authoritatively settled at Trent, and exhibited in the decrees of the council, its catechism, and the creed of Pope Pius IV. He has also endeavoured to render the work interesting to general readers by interweaving historical sketches, illustrative of the spirit and tendency of the sentiments maintained by Roman Catholics. The whole is intended to present a picture of Popery as it is fairly and faithfully drawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Winner of the John Gilmary Shea Prize The Council of Trent (1545–1563), the Catholic Church’s attempt to put its house in order in response to the Protestant Reformation, has long been praised and blamed for things it never did. Now, in this first full one-volume history in modern times, John W. O’Malley brings to life the volatile issues that pushed several Holy Roman emperors, kings and queens of France, and five popes—and all of Europe with them—repeatedly to the brink of disaster. During the council’s eighteen years, war and threat of war among the key players, as well as the Ottoman Turks’ onslaught against Christendom, turned the council into a perilous enterprise. Its leaders declined to make a pronouncement on war against infidels, but Trent’s most glaring and ironic silence was on the authority of the papacy itself. The popes, who reigned as Italian monarchs while serving as pastors, did everything in their power to keep papal reform out of the council’s hands—and their power was considerable. O’Malley shows how the council pursued its contentious parallel agenda of reforming the Church while simultaneously asserting Catholic doctrine. Like What Happened at Vatican II, O’Malley’s Trent: What Happened at the Council strips mythology from historical truth while providing a clear, concise, and fascinating account of a pivotal episode in Church history. In celebration of the 450th anniversary of the council’s closing, it sets the record straight about the much misunderstood failures and achievements of this critical moment in European history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Council of Trent: Comprising an Account of the Proceedings of That Assembly; And Illustrating the Spirit and Tendency of Popery This volume contains the historical portion of the work entitled, "A d104-Book of Popery; comprising a History of the Council of Trent, held a. d. 1545 - 1563, and a complete view of the theological system of Popery. By J. M. Cramp. Second Edition. 1839. 8vo." It has been rearranged and abridged by the author. As it was deemed unnecessary, in a work intended for general readers, to crowd the margin with references, it may suffice to state, that the authorities chiefly consulted are the rival histories of Father Paul and Cardinal Pallavicini, and the voluminous collection of documents relative to the Council, published by Le Plat, a. d. 1781 - 1787, in seven quarto volumes. Book Lectures on the Council of Trent

Download or read book Lectures on the Council of Trent written by James Anthony Froude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Council of Trent: Delivered at Oxford 1892-3 The lectures on the Council of Trent were delivered by Mr. Froude in the Michaelmas Term of 1892 and the Hilary Term of 1898. They formed the first of three courses delivered by him during the eighteen months in which he was in residence at Oxford as Regius Professor of Modern History. Two of these courses, the lectures on Erasmus and on the English Seamen of the Sixteenth Century, have already been published. Had Mr. Froude lived to publish the present series of lectures, he would no doubt have thoroughly revised and corrected them. They were addressed to varying audiences, and for this reason contain repetitions which may appear superfluous to the reader. The author would also no doubt have given, in footnotes, references to the original authorities, as in the published lectures on Eras mus. The quotations are not literal translations, but abridgments or paraphrases, and as their ao curacy can, for the most part, easily be verified, it has been thought advisable to publish the lectures as they stood, with only a few verbal corrections.
