Book History of the Corporation of Birmingham Vol 3

Download or read book History of the Corporation of Birmingham Vol 3 written by Charles Anthony Vince and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Corporation of Birmingham, Vol. 3: 1885-1889 The several chapters have. Been read in manuscript by Oficers of the Corporation and members of the Council, to whom I am grateful for valuable criticisms and suggestions. I have especially to thank the Officers of the Health Department for checking the statistics given in the fifth chapter, and making the corrections rendered necessary by the error in the official estimate of population before the census of 1891. It must, however, be understood that the author is solely responsible for any inaccuracies that may be detected in the book, except those which reproduce errors, if any, contained in the original records on which the narrative is based. My task has been to select, according to the best of my judgment, from a very large number of recorded details, those that might be usefully repeated in a convenient book of reference. I have followed, as closely as seemed expedient, the arrange ment of topics adopted by Mr. Bunce in the second volume of this History, never deviating therefrom except after careful consideration. Wherever uniformity has been sacrificed, I trust that the reasons will be apparent and satisfactory. I have not supposed that, in asking me to become the historian of their achievements, the members of the City Council were also inviting me to assume the position of a critic. I have therefore endeavoured, though not with entire success, to avoid the intrusion of judgment and Opinion, and to resist the demon that tempts the most modest historian to try his hand at general remarks. I have borne in mind throughout that one thing which the general reader, if he condescends to read this book, will expect to find there, is a reasonable and particular account of the expansion of municipal expenditure. Of financial details, therefore, I have been unsparing, even to weariness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does our colonial past echo through today's global politics? How have former empire-builders sought vindication or atonement, and formerly colonized states reversal or retribution? This groundbreaking book presents a panoramic view of attitudes to empires past and present, seen not only through the hard politics of international power structures but also through the nuances of memory, historiography and national and minority cultural identities. Bringing together leading historians, poitical scientists and international relations scholars from across the globe, Echoes of Empire emphasizes Europe's colonial legacy whilst also highlighting the importance of non-European power centres- Ottoman, Russian, Chinese, Japanese- in shaping world politics, then and now. Echoes of Empire bridges the divide between disciplines to trace the global routes travelled by objects, ideas and people and forms a radically different notion of the term 'empire' itself. This will be an essential companion to courses on international relations and imperial history as well as a fascinating read for anyone interested in Western hegemony, North-South relations, global power shifts and the longue duree.

Book excerpt: Marking the remarkable century of Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, from humble beginnings in London's East End in 1915 to a fully-fledged mainstream art museum, under its banner 'Art, Identity and Migration', this publication vividly illustrates rarely seen masterworks from its collection by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, including Soutine, Chagall, Auerbach, Bomberg, Kitaj and Kossoff. Further highlights include the 'Whitechapel Boys'; Les Peintres Juifs de L'Ecole de Paris, Official War artists from both conflicts; mid-century emigres influencing the direction of the arts, and contemporary artists making ground-breaking work across new media. This unique collection, primarily of artists born into the Jewish faith, many shaping modern British, European and American art history, represents a distinct visual survey of artistic and social life in Britain and the cultural heritage of British Jewry. A range of texts provides a fascinating context for a collection born 'Out of Chaos'. Contents: Chairman's Foreword: Out of Chaos: Shaping the future from the past; Introduction to the Ben Uri Collection: A century of engagement with British and European Art Catalogue; 1 Whitechapel Boys; 2 Soutine, Chagall and the School of Paris; 3 Forced Journeys; 4 Postwar; 5 School of London; Chronology of Ben Uri; Notes; Bibliography; Legacy of Teachers."
