Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 7: Forming a Sequel to "the History of the French Revolution" At the same period, important events were passing in Dalma tia, the Russians still retained the mouths of the Cattaro. Napoleon, taking pattern from their conduct on this point, and in particular from the manner in which they had occupied Corfu, and usurped the sovereignty of it, had resolved to seize the little republic of Ragusa, which separated Cattaro from the rest of Dalmatia. He had sent thither his aide-de-camp Lau riston, with a brigade of infantry, for the purpose of establish ing himself there. Lauriston was presently surrounded by the insurgent Montenegrins and by a Russian corps of some thou sand men. Blockaded by the English on the sea side, besieged by ferocious mountaineers and a regular Russian force on the land side, he found himself in real danger, which, however, he faced with courage. Fortunately, general Molitor, an equally faithful companion in arms and firm and skilful officer in presence of the enemy, ew to his relief. That general, not following the example too frequent in the army of the Rhine, of leaving in the lurch a neighbour whom one dislikes, proceeded sponta neously by forced marches to Ragusa, with a corps of men, resolutely attacked the camp of the Russians and the Montenegrins, carried it though strongly entrenched, and thus extricated the French who were in the place. He put to the sword a great number of Montenegrins and deterred them for a long time from their incursions into Dalmatia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 12 of 12 What we have said shows how great would have been the folly of hastening to the Rhine on the morrow of the 20th of March to take advantage of the enthusiasm excited by the miraculous return from Elba. Had Napoleon done so, he would have met forces triple and quadruple the strength of his own; he would, by going so far, have made the reconstruction of our regiments more difficult and almost impossible, and finally, he would have turned against him all those who desired that every means of preserving peace should be tried, and who would not pardon his going to war unless it was absolutely inevi table. But if it were wise to wait until our forces were drawn from the inefficient state in which they were on 20th of March, and until the hostile dispositions of Europe were no longer doubtful, there remained an important question, whether having waited until the middle of June, it would not have been better to wait until the middle of July or August, when our forces would have been completely organised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 10 of 12 When the approach of these prisoners was announced, all the population of Paris thronged to the boulevards, to see defile before them Prussians, Austrians, and Russians, marching dis armed, headed by their officers and generals. The prisoners, indeed, displayed no arrogance in their demeanour, neither did they seem utterly dejected; it was easy to discern in their faces a very different expression from that formerly manifested by the captives taken at Austerlitz and Jena. There was a certain look of confidence and real pride at having been captured so close to our capital. Though the people of Paris were tired of the imperial rule, and perfectly well aware of the bad effects of a despotism.
