Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Commune of Paris The Commune of Paris, the first Government erected by the working classes, may justly be considered as the beginning in earnest of the struggle between Capital and Labour. The power of Capital is so great, and the belief in the sacredness of private property so old and so deeply rooted in the mind of man, that their abolition does not appear to be so near at hand as some predict. Labour cannot be entirely free until most of our political and social institutions and class distinctions, together with private property, the foundation of our social condition, have passed away. We can see no other solution of this tremendous and most perplexing question, the great question of our age. All the remedies which have been proposed up to the present time are nothing but quack palliatives, and completely powerless to reconcile the opposite class interests to each other. Indeed, their reconciliation is a downright impossibility. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paris Commune The Paris Commune: its history and meaning. To begin, I take the story of "The New-York Tribune: " abridging, but nowhere altering, "The Tribune's" reports. In the accompanying notes I make such additions and corrections as I find fairly authenticated in the various Paris journals of the same dates. Paris, March 9, 1871. The Committee of the Bordeaux Assembly reports in favor of removing to Fontainebleau. Thiers persists in preferring Versailles. March 10. A private dispatch from Paris states that the National Guards are strongly intrenched in Montmartre, with thirty-three guns, awaiting the signal of their leaders to proclaim open revolution in favor of the Commune; also threatening to dissolve the Assembly if it meets at Versailles. The Government is conciliatory. March 14. The insurgents have given in. March 16. They are scattering on account of the weather. March 17. The situation is unchanged. No acts of violence have been committed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Adventures in the Commune: Paris, 1871 There is more historical and less personal matter in this volume than in my previous one. I have aimed rather at giving my readers a general idea of the Commune's successive phases than at penning a complete account of my own varied experiences. In many instances, however, in which I do not mention myself, I supply facts based on personal observation. Now and again, some episode has lent itself to narrative of an autobiographical character, and I have then without compunction sounded a personal note. I may add that in preparing my general narrative I have consulted a number of books, and many newspapers of the time. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Paris Commune of 1871 Lausanne. Whilst it did so, another congress, composed entirely of French republican politicians - headed by M. Jules Favre, the leader of the Opposition party in the Legislative Assembly - met at Geneva under the title of the League of Peace and Liberty, and made overtures to the democratic International - overtures which the latter reciprocated, but, in its own mind, attached too much importance to. A few months afterwards the Parisian Internationalists indulged in a novel enterprise; to wit, an open-air political demonstration. After the interchange of compliments which had occurred in Switzer, land, the Internationalists not unnaturally expected the personal support of M. Jules Favre at their demonstration; but this gentleman did not appear, and, in consequence, was written to and expostulated with. M. Favre, however, esteemed himself too considerable a personage to be connected intimately with workmen or with a manifestation that was sure to come under the aegis of Napoleonic law; he curtly replied that there was no alliance betwixt them. The demonstration had more tangible result in attracting the attention of the police, as a result of which the executive commission of the International was by legal process dissolved, and its leaders fined 100 francs each. Book History of the Commune of 1871 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Commune of 1871 Classic Reprint written by Eleanor Marx Aveling and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Commune of 1871 The following translation of Lissagaray's "Histoire de la Commune" was made many years ago, at the express wish of the author, who, besides making many emendations in his work, wrote nearly a hundred pages especially for this English version. The translation, in fact, was made from the "Histoire de la Commune" as prepared for a second edition - an edition which the French Government would not allow to be published. This explanation is necessary in view of the differences between the translation and the first edition of Lissagaray's book. Written in 1876, there are necessarily passages in this history out of date to-day; as, for example, the references to the prisoners in New Caledonia, the exiles, and the amnesty. But for two reasons I prefer leaving this translation as it was originally. To have it "written up to date" would only be making patchwork of it. Secondly, I am loth to alter the work in any way. It had been entirely revised and corrected by my father. I want it to remain as he knew it. Lissagaray's "Histoire de la Commune" is the only authentic and reliable history as yet written of the most memorable movement of modern times. It is true Lissagaray was a soldier of the Commune, but he has had the courage and honesty to speak the truth. Book The Paris Commune

Download or read book The Paris Commune written by Karl Marx and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paris Commune: Including the "First Manifesto of the International on the Franco-Prussian War," the "Second Manifesto of the International on the Franco-Prussian War," "the Civil War in France" In an edition recently issued by a New York publisher, the two manifestoes on the franco-prussian War are omitted, and the English abridgment of Engels' intro duction is still further abridged to make it conform to the absence of the omitted documents. Deeming it but just to both Marx and Engels that their work should be given to the public in an unabridged form, we present in this volume the first complete edition of the essays by Marx and the introduction by Engels published in the English language. The only liberty we have taken with the text is the addition of chapter titles to The Civil War in France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Episodes of the Paris Commune: In 1871 It was not that our mishap had frightened them, but that they knew their services to be required elsewhere. Each set Off at once for his appointed post, one in the second school Of the Rue Vanneau, the other in the third Of Rue St. Benoit. The latter was soon ousted by four individuals, who took forcible possession in the name of the Commune he bid for a few hours in a neighboring house, and then set out for the Rue Vanneau, to help his colleague. The two together held their own till noon; but the best will in the world could not do justice to the needs Of four classes, and two men could not do the work Of six. TO persevere would have been rashness more than courage; so they dismissed their numerous scholars, and managed to leave Paris the same day in secular costume. While On the subject of the Rue Vanneau school, we are happy to mention Monsieur Roux, assis tant-teacher in the neighboring school in. The Rue du Bac, whom neither threats nor importuni ties could induce to take the place from which the Brothers had been ousted. Monsieur Roux is a man Of honor and a conscientious teacher Of youth, and it is easy to perceive why he would accept no employment at the hands Of the Com mune, nor agree to the demoralizing method im posed On the ward-schools by the Communists. The Brothers' school in the Rue Vanneau was therefore closed, as well as that in the neighboring parish Of St. Thomas, whose teachers were im prisoned in No. I4 Rue Fleurus. To return to the history Of our community. The anxiety which had seized us on our arrest gave place to hope as soon as the corporal in formed us that a member of the Commune would visit us at eight O'clock, and that we might ex peot to hear further orders. We were simple enough to believe that these very orders would bring us relief, and we further comforted our selves with trust in God's providence. Although in the hands of our foes, were we not equally in those Of our heavenly Father? Peace and re signation thus sustained us.
