Book Philosophy and History of Education

Download or read book Philosophy and History of Education written by Antoinette Errante and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies of philosophy and history of education are under siege. These studies do not attract large grant funds and, to many, do not seem useful, even while much of educational research is dismissed as inconsequential or self-evident and the crisis in American education deepens. Philosophy and history of education have therefore been pushed to the margin--or beyond--in colleges and schools of education, commensurate with the "decline of the humanities" in higher education generally. Philosophy and History of Education examines the complex relationship between these studies, and the value of these related studies for improving educational knowledge, policy, and practice. From diverse perspectives, the philosophers and historians in this volume explore how bringing these disciplines together yields insights about unacknowledged or occult aspects of education problems that neither could achieve on their own.

Book The Ohio State University in the Sixties

Download or read book The Ohio State University in the Sixties written by William J. Shkurti and published by Trillium. This book was released on 2016 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 5:30 p.m. on May 6, 1970, an embattled Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett took the unprecedented step of closing down the university. Despite the presence of more than 1,500 armed highway patrol officers, Ohio National Guardsmen, deputy sheriffs, and Columbus city police, university and state officials feared they could not maintain order in the face of growing student protests. Students, faculty, and staff were ordered to leave; administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories were closed. The campus was sealed off. Never in the first one hundred years of the university's existence had such a drastic step been necessary. Just a year earlier the campus seemed immune to such disruptions. President Nixon considered it safe enough to plan an address at commencement. Yet a year later the campus erupted into a spasm of violent protest exceeding even that of traditional hot spots like Berkeley and Wisconsin. How could conditions have changed so dramatically in just a few short months? Using contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials, and first-person interviews, The Ohio State University in the Sixties explores how these tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case study of one of America's many multi-ethnic border communities, Great Lakes Creoles builds upon recent research on gender, race, ethnicity, and politics as it examines the ways that the old fur trade families experienced and responded to the colonialism of United States expansion. Lucy Eldersveld Murphy examines Indian history with attention to the pluralistic nature of American communities and the ways that power, gender, race, and ethnicity were contested and negotiated in them. She explores the role of women as mediators shaping key social, economic, and political systems, as well as the creation of civil political institutions and the ways that men of many backgrounds participated in and influenced them. Ultimately, Great Lakes Creoles takes a careful look at Native people and their complex families as active members of an American community in the Great Lakes region.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image of Excellence is the hard-hitting story of what Time once called «America's Most Famous School.» Born in the despair of the Great Depression, the Ohio State University School grew to preeminence during the American progressive school movement launched by legendary education philosopher John Dewey. Throughout its thirty-six year history, the University School remained the progressive era's most unusual school - in part by not being a teacher preparation facility and in part by its democratic decision-making and student involvement. No matter its origins in roaring twenties' liberalism, the University School remained largely apolitical and ill prepared for the paradigm shift in American politics that accompanied the Vietnam War.
