Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Civil War, Vol. 3 of 3 IN the work now completed by this volume I have endeavored to convert the annals of the Civil War into a history. In the annals of a nation, each occurrence, Whether important or unimportant, is presented as an isolated fact, irrespective Of its bear ing on the general course of affairs. Its philosophical connection with other occurrences is not necessarily traced out. The first duty of one who would write a history is to take such annals of the events with which he has to deal, and to discover among them what may be termed the master-facts. In his narrative he must bring these into prominence, making them the conspicuous centres around which the minor or subordinate facts are grouped. The impression which he will finally leave on the mind of his reader depends upon the Clearness Of his narrative, and this, in its turn, de pends upon the completeness with which the rule here indicated has been Observed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 3 This volume completes the Chronicle of the Civil War. It comprises a record of the events of the conflict from midsummer of 1863, until the close of the struggle, in the field, in the spring of 1865. The second volume was ended with the record of the capture of Vicksburg and Port Hudson by the National armies, in July. It also contains a record of the important movements in Eastern and Southeastern Tennessee, which were followed by Sherman's great march and series of confiicts from Chattanooga, byway of Atlanta, to the sea, and thence through the Carolinas; and the expulsion of the Confederates from Tennessee, by Thomas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Civil War, Vol. 1 of 3 In the course of American National Life three distinct Periods may be perceived. The first was characterized by an earnest acceptance of the Idea of Political Unity; the second manifested itself by the Decomposition of the Nation that had arisen from that Idea into two geographical and Opposing Political Powers - the North and the South, or the Free and the Slave; the third exhibits the Conflict of those Powers for Supremacy. Since the production of Geographical Parties is due to Climate, the possibility of avoiding such Influences is considered, and the necessity of their Study by the Statesman insisted on. Download or read book History of the American Civil War Vol 2 of 3 Classic Reprint written by John William Draper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Civil War, Vol. 2 of 3 The events considered in this volume occurred between the accession of Mr. Lincoln and the Proclamation of Freedom to the Slaves. Chronologically they range from the 4th of March, 1861, to the 1st of January, 1863, inclusive. An examination of these events shows that they may be conveniently grouped under certain sections or heads. By that means they are more easily borne in mind, and their relation to each other more clearly understood. The secession movement exhibited the character of a conspiracy for some time after the accession of Lincoln. There may be a difference of opinion as to the exact epoch at which it lost that character, but, for reasons subsequently mentioned, I have placed the limit at the battle of Bull Run, which also coincides with the translation of the Confederate seat of power to Richmond, manifested by the assembly of a Congress in that city on July 20th, 1861. The battle of Bull Run satisfied both the national government and its antagonist that the results sought by each could not be attained by the tumultuary levies which the people, then unacquainted with war, had up to that time supposed would be sufficient. It had become plain that real armies must be called into existence. The period during which the resources on both sides were organized is closed by Lincoln's general War Order of the 27th of January, 1862, commanding an advance of the national forces. Meantime, however, certain small military affairs had been taking place. These, though they excited public attention very much at the time, exerted, in reality, little or no influence on the general result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 4 The volume now presented to the American reader contains, without abridgment, the seventh volume of the French Edition, and so much of the eighth volume as was contained in the manu script which the distinguished Author carried with him when he was banished from France. Previous to the promulgation of the decree of banishment a speedy completion of the work was hoped for, but political reslmnsibilities, and an enforced absence from the collection of books and manuscripts at Chateau d'eu relating to the Civil \var of 1861 - 65, have not justified this. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 From the commencement of our Government there have been two antagonistic principles contending for the mastery - Slavery and Freedom. In the very heart of our democracy, the element of the most haughty and intolerant aristocracy has been nurtured, by the institution of human bondage. The most repulsive features of the old European feudalism have thus been transplanted into our Republic. The slaveholders, accustomed to despotic power over the wretched serfs, whom they have driven, by the lash, to till their soil, have assumed a sort of baronial arrogance over all men who do not own slaves, and have claimed to be the only gentle men, and the legitimate rulers of this land. But freedom has outstripped slavery in this race. And, consequently, the slaveholders, unreconciled to the loss of supremacy, strive to destroy the temple of liberty, wish ing to raise themselves into lords and potentates, over the ruin of their country. The conflict in which our nation is now involved, is simply a desperate struggle, on the part of the slaveholders, to retain, by force of arms, that domination in the government of this Republic, which they had so long held, and which, by the natural operation of the ballot-box, they were slowly but surely losing. We have here, simply the repetition of that great conflict, which, for ages, has agitated our globe - the conflict between aristocratic usurpation and popular rights. The battle has assumed the most momentous attitude, since it arrays, on either side, all the intel lectual and material energies developed by the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 It would have been unbecoming in me to argue upon contro verted questions, national, political, or military, upon which, after careful investigation and mature deliberation, the author has expressed himself decidedly. Least of all have I considered it within my province to say a word as to his estimates of individuals and their relations to the government. He has himself said that his history was written for European readers, who desire to know only his impressions and conclusions. But the book will be largely read in this country by people more capable of judging its facts and its philosophy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Civil War, Vol. 3: A History of the Late Rebellion, With Biographical Sketches of Leading Statesmen and Distinguished Naval and Military Commanders, Etc I entered perhaps twenty buildings in all, and found frightful-looking holes in the walls and floors of every one. Rl'he house occupied by General Pem berton as his headquarters, has a hole in the first room you enter on the left side of the hall, which a mule could crawl through without difficulty. The publisher of the Vicksburg Citizen invited me into his residence, and interspersed his remarks while showing me around with frequent cautions not to tread here and there, for fear a shattered piece of its flooring would let me through into the cellar. And so it is all over the place. The northern portion of the city suffered most, and I cannot convey any idea of the damage sustained better than by saying it has been smashed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book served in the American Civil War. He was an officer under General George B. McClellan. He made it to America where he and his brother served as officers in the Union Army in some of the most horrific battles in the American Civil War, including the Peninsula Campaign in South Eastern Virginia where they were lucky to survive. Volume Three is concerned with the Confederate victory in the Battle of Chancellersville, following which Lee decided to invade the North especially Pennsylvania. Chapter II of Volume Three is concerned with the Battle of Gettysberg and is perhaps the most authoratative account of that battle. Following his lack of success at Gettysburg, Lee retreated back into Virginia.
