This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Vol. 1 The early history of every city has a peculiar interest, not only to its founders, but hardly less to those who come later. Even incidents. Considered at the time of their occurence unimportant, later assume a value unsuspected to those connected with them. This fact is true in the life of individuals, and it is more emphasized in the life of a city. Cities which have failed to preserve authentic records of their early beginnings, have never ceased to regret it, and this feeling becomes intensified with each passing year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Minnesota and Its People: And Early History of Minneapolis On returning from Mexico to my Wisconsin home in 1848, with impaired health, I thought of returning to a claim I made in Texas in 184 G.During a military march in the fall of 1846 from Matamoras to a point on the plains some forty miles east of that city into Texas, the command lost its bearings on the prairie, through the carelessness of the guide, and in seeking water and a place to camp, after a march of two days, on the second night a light was seen in the distance which evidently indicated the presence of either a settlement of whites or a Comanche camp. The latter would not be a desirable event, but after so long a march over an unbroken wilderness it was decided best to approach the signs of habitation. About midnight the place was reached and it was found that three men had taken claims on the banks of a small stream which drained that part of Texas, where both mesquite trees and grass were abundant. The owners of these claims were from New Orleans where, as clerks, they had saved considerable money. They had concluded to unite their earnings and become planters in southwestern Texas. They purchased a few negroes and mules, supplied themselves with provisions and agricultural implements, and wandered through the wilds of Texas in search of land suitable for planting, and located in what they thought the most desirable place. Upon a hasty examination of the neighborhood the next morning, I decided to take an adjoining claim, and employed them to make improvements on it for me, with a full intention of making it a permanent home after the war. Book History of Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis

Download or read book History of Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis written by Edward D. Neill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis: Including the Explorers Ans Pioneers of Minnesota If, then, the past is not simply a stepping-stone to the future, but a part of our very selves, we can not afford to ignore it. Or separate it from ourselves, as a member might be lopped off from our bodies for though the body thus maimed might perform many and perhaps most of its functions, still it could never again be called complete. We, therefore, present this volume to our patrons in Hennepin county, not as something extrinsic, to which we would attract their notice and secure their favor, but as a part of themselves, and an important part, which it is the province of the historian to re-invigorate and restore to its rightful owner. Moveover, we can not but hope that we shall thus confer much pleasure. The recounting of events which have transpired in our own neighborhood is the most interesting of all history. There is a fascination in the study of the intermingled fact and fiction of the past which is heightened by a familiarity with the localities described. The writer remembers the glow of enthusiasm with which he once stood at the entrance of the old fort at Ticonderoga, and repeated the words of Ethan Allen In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress, etc. The river which flows through our native village acquires a new interest when, in imagination, we see the Indian canoe on its surface and the skin - covered tepee on its banks, as in days of yore. Log cabins, straw roofs, and the rude betterments of the hardy pioneer, are the next changes on the scene, followed soon by mushroom towns, some of which perish as quickly as they spring up, while others astonish us by their rapid growth; cities are built, and moss and ivy, the evidences of age, soon accumulate. The log cabin and all the incipient steps of first settlement are things of the past The place which knew them shall know them no more forever. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, Vol. 1 It was not, however, a very encouraging prospect for an institution of that kind. The population of St. Paul was only 400 or 500, and there were but three or four towns in the Territory, which was then still occupied by the Indians, and had altogether not over white imbabi tants. These were mostly poor settlers, and in the struggle for subsist ence in a new country, still a wilderness, had scarcely leisure or means to cultivate aesthetics or write or study history. Consequently the development of the Society was very slow during the first few years. In 1858 there were only 441 volumes in the Library, and those of minor value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Minneapolis The author has grown up in Minneapolis. He believes in Minneapolis and wants all the boys and girls in the city to believe in Minneapolis. But how shall they believe in the city of which they have not heard. And how shall-they under stand except they be guided? In the course of his teaching the author has tried to guide some of them, both in the class-room and through the city itself, to a better knowledge of what Minneapolis has been, what she is, geographically, industrially, and culturally, and whither she is tending, so far as we are able to judge by the activities of her citizens, At the same time, following the revised course of study, grade teachers have been aiming at the same end. If this book shall prove of service to them in their interpretation of the city built to music, and therefore never built, and therefore built for ever, the author will feel deeply gratified. Book A History of Minnesota Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Minnesota Vol 1 of 4 Classic Reprint written by William Watts Folwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 1 of 4 During his presidency at the university Dr. Folwell not only laid broad and firm foundations for that institution but also took the lead in promoting the development of high schools and in building up a unified system of public educa tion in the state. The establishment of the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey in 1872 was also a result of his foresight and initiative. After his resignation from the presidency of the university in 1884 Dr. Folwell rendered notable services to that institution as professor of political science and as librarian until his retirement in 1907. His influence, however, was by no means confined to scholastic matters. He could always be counted on to aid in any movement for the advancement of culture and the public welfare. Thus he was one of the founders of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts and served as its president from 1869 to 1884; from 1888 to 1906 he was an active mem ber of the Minneapolis park commission; and from 1896 to 1902 he served on the state board of charities and correc tions. Book A Half Century of Minneapolis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Half Century of Minneapolis Classic Reprint written by Horace B. Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Half Century of Minneapolis The general plan of the book has been that of grouping events of common interest rather than the chronological listing of happenings without regard to their relations and significance. With this design in mind the first seven chapters and the last are devoted to sketching several not definitely limited periods in the city's history, while Chapters VIII to XXVIII, inclusive, take up separate phases of the life and activities of the city, each account being in a measure complete in itself. In this method of treating the history of Minneapolis, much in the way of anecdote and reminiscence of the pioneers - which would find a place in a more extended work - has been, of necessity, omitted. Many side lights, however, are thrown upon the story of the city in the biographical sketches of men who have had a part in its building. These brief sketches will give an insight into the character of the people of Minneapolis which, possibly, could be oh tained in no other way, and will give to outsiders an explanation of many things which may seem to them incredible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of History and Biography of Minneapolis and Hennepin County, Minnesota The special thanks of the publishers are due also and are warmly tendered to Mr. C. M. Loring for his splendid and sparkling chapter entitled Looking Through a Vista of Fifty Years; to Mr. Thomas B. Walker for his highly entertaining and valuable Early History of the Lumber Industry; to Mr. George H. Christian for his graphic and interesting account of the founding of the milling industry and fast-fading stories of its early days; to Mr. George H. Warren for showing in an impressive way the relation ship of the woodsmen to the lumber industry, the vital necessity for their service and its inestimable value; to Major R. I. Holcombe for his masterful work in preparing the-general history of the city which en riches the volume, and to many other persons whose aid is highly appreciated but who are too numerous to be mentioned specifically by name. Without the valuable and judicious aid of all these persons, those who are named and those who are not, it would have been impossible to compile a history of the complete ness and high character this one is believed to have. Finally, to the residents of Minneapolis and Henne pin County, to whose patronage the book is indebted for its publication, and w ose life stories constitute a large part of its contents, t e publishers freely tender their grateful thanks, with the hope that the volume will be an ample and satisfactory recompense. It is submitted to the judgment of the public with no other voice to proclaim its worth than that of its own in herent merits, whatever they may be. Book The Story of Minnesota Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Minnesota Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Hubert Marshall Skinner and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Minnesota, Vol. 1 The Story of Minnesota is called, on its shield, "The Star of the North," though the words, as written, appear in French, thus: "L 'Etoile du Nord." Since every State is represented by a separate star in our nation's flag, it is natural to speak of States, sometimes, as "stars;" and of all the States, Minnesota projects farthest to the north. In fact, it includes part of a peninsula away up in the Ike of the Woods, which singular fact calls for an explanation. When our nation made peace with Great Britain at the close of the Revolutionary War, it was agreed that the Mississippi should be our western boundary all the way up to our northern boundary. But it was found, later, that the Mississippi did not extend so far north. Hence the western boundary was pieced out by an imaginary line running northward from the source of the river into the lake mentioned, cutting off for us an odd piece of land which we cannot reach except by boat, unless we pass through some of the Canadian land. It was proper that the motto on Minnesota's shield should be written in French, for that was practically the only European language used in this region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the words recall to mind the arduous labors and great services of brave French explorers, missionaries. and traders in the days of the long ago.
