Book The Capitol Visitor Center

Download or read book The Capitol Visitor Center written by Matthijs Buskirk and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Capitol Visitor Center (CVC), which officially opened to the public on December 2nd 2008, was designed to enhance the security, educational experience, and comfort of those visiting the U.S. Capitol. The decision to build a subterranean facility under the East Front Plaza, largely invisible from an exterior perspective, was made so the structure would not compete with, or detract from, the appearance and historical architectural integrity of the Capitol. The cost of the Center, the most expensive addition to the Capitol since the Civil War, and the largest in the structure's more than 200-year history, was an estimated $621 million. The project was financed with appropriated funds, and $65 million from private donations and revenue generated by the sale of commemorative coins. This book examines the rationale and planning behind building the Center, the costs of the project, the pre-construction and construction phase of the Center, and a discussion of the on site security of the Center after September 11th. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book excerpt: The Residents of the Capital are no Strangers to Malfeasance and Misappropriation Emanating from the Hill. Since L'Enfant laid his avenues, Capitol Hill has been home to the most titillating tales and unsavory indignities. Consider the 1887 affair between the congressman and the local cobbler's daughter that led to murder at the hands of the press-literally. Such misdeeds were not confined to the backrooms of Congress. Nearby, the old Capitol Jail housed Confederate spice in squalid conditions, and years later, an Eighth Street tavern had the dubious privilege of evicting a young George C. Scott. From the wharves of the Navy Yard to the grave of an infamous madam in Congressional Cemetery, tour guide and local historian Robert Pohl wends his way through the most wickedly sinful scandals in Capitol Hill's history. Book The Lost History of the Capitol

Download or read book The Lost History of the Capitol written by Edward P. Moser and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lost History of the Capitol is an account of the many bizarre, tragic, and violent episodes that have occurred in and around the Capitol Building, from the founding of the federal capital city in 1790 up to contemporary times, including the events of January 6, 2021. In this 230-year span, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the neighborhoods nearby have witnessed dozens of high-profile scandals, trials, riots, bombings, and personal assaults, along with some inspiring events as well. This is a popular work about the US Capitol Building and its environs. Among the many incidents the book chronicles are a duel-to-the-death between congressmen, the terror bombings of the Senate, the first assassination attempt on a US president, moving tributes to war heroes and heroines, vicious brawls between senators and congressmen, protest marches both uplifting and illicit, public hangings near the Capitol steps, a gun battle in the House, bloody ethnic broils quelled by a famous father and son, and the citywide and Capitol Building riots of 2020–21.
