Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Brethren in Virginia History is always a fascinating subject. Few things appeal to us more strongly than the achievements of generations that have passed. Their trials, their difficulties, the light and the shade of their varied experiences were not very different from those that we shall have to encounter. And our prospects for acquitting ourselves in the battle of life better than they have done will depend very largely on how well we have learned the lesson of their successes and failures. As a people, we Dunkers have been strangely careless in regard to our past. We have kept few records and many of these are imperfect and incomplete. Like true men in any great cause, our predecessors have been content to work patiently and in obscurity, trusting to Providence for results, and little suspecting the far-reaching significance with which their humble labors were fraught. They little dreamed that they were making history, and that of the truest and noblest sort. Had they done so, they might have kept a fuller and more accurate record of their doings. The fact that, until recently, we have given no adequate account of ourselves to the world has led to endless confusion and misunderstanding. I suppose no people have been less understood and more persistently misrepresented than we. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the Church of the Brethren of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Church of the Brethren of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of the Brethren of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania History, whether ancient or modern, is always interesting, and instructive to the average reader. It is, however, of special interest to him when he studies the history of his own native land, his own people, his own kindred. So while our people read with deep interest the history of other religious denominations, once they turn to the narrative that chronicles the history of our own fraternity, her organization in the Fatherland, her early trials and persecutions, the flight across the ocean, the settlement in the new world, the bitter trials and sufferings, as well as the remarkable deliverances, triumphs and blessings, the spread of the Gospel, the new organizations through her consecrated efforts, the story becomes intensely interesting and fascinating. At District Meeting of 1911 a committee composed of the following brethren was appointed, viz.: S. R. Zug, John Herr, G. N. Falkenstein, J. G. Francis and D. C. Reber to gather statistics and facts concerning the activities and work of the Church of the Brethren in the territory then constituting the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from the beginning of the Brethren in America to the present time and compile the same in book form. This beautiful volume placed into the hands of the reader is the result of the untiring, persistent faithful effort of these men of God. We do not stop to quote Eccl. 12: 12, or to apologize for introducing this new history of the Church of the Brethren of Eastern Pennsylvania for reasons that follow. The volume fills a unique place and a long-felt want with our people, and will be hailed with joy by thousands in our own State District and throughout the brotherhood. In reading and examining the manuscript, the writer was impressed with the amount of new data and material that is here given in book form for the first time. Book History of the Church of the Brethren of the Western District of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of the Brethren of the Western District of Pennsylvania The biographical sketches are of great value. Many of those whose lives appear here have wielded an influence far beyond the District, and have decidedly aided the denomina tion to victories even in other lands. To trace the growth of a quiet, unassuming folk, devout and faithful, as this history does, is to make one believe still more that God is always with those who put their trust in him, and that they mount over difficulties and accomplish ends com mensurate only with the idea that Omnipotence has been with them. I most heartily recommend the book to the many who should know the story of the Church of the Brethren in Western Pennsylvania. Book A History of the Plymouth Brethren Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Plymouth Brethren Classic Reprint written by William Blair Neatby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Plymouth Brethren It will be seen that I have been very sparing of references to my authorities. This has been partly due to a belief that my readers will in most cases share my dislike to a text encumbered with notes; but partly also to the peculiarities of the special case. The great majority of the authorities are now inaccessible to most readers. I have consulted scores of tracts that very few people could possibly procure. Besides those in my own pos session, or in possession of my relatives, very many have come under my inspection through the cour tesy of friends with whom my articles had brought me into correspondence. To one correspondent, whose connexion with the Brethren dates back to 1845, I am under obligations that I find it quite impossible to adequately acknowledge. Not only has he placed at my disposal a set of tracts that is, I should suppose, almost unrivalled for the period 1845-70, but he has taken the greatest pains to clear up, by the help of private correspondence, various obscurities that I have submitted to him. For the later period, my own resources have been very ample. Instead of constant references, I have furnished at the end of the book a sufficient bibliography, chronologically classified. In one or two instances only, I have mentioned books that I have not succeeded in consulting. On the other hand, I have omitted very many that I have not found of much service, and on the sole authority of which I have stated nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Teaching of the Plymouth Brethren Of the day of some portion of her inherit ance of truth which has been forgotten for a season, but for the revival of which the circumstances of the time are imperatively calling; while on the other hand the special character of any false teaching which may accompany such movements demands the attentive and dispassionate examination of all who desire to see their way through the perplexities of their time, and to secure the religious interests of their country. All these considerations apply in full force to the re markable movement with which we are now concerned. Its rapid growth, its wide-spread influence, its tenacious hold on those who join it, all go to Show that it is felt by many both in this and foreign countries to furnish some kind of supply to the religious necessities of the age. An examination of it then may help us to see what these necessities are, and Should lead Churchmen to enquire further whether the Church herself out of the abundant stores committed to her keeping is not fully able to supply them. Book A History of the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and America Classic Reprint written by Martin Grove Brumbaugh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and America To write the history of a religious movement, following it through all of its stages of growth, is no ordinary task, though all the data pertaining to the movement be easy of access. But when the material has to be taken from the forest, so to speak, and then reduced to shape, so as to make it an object of beauty, as well as the source of reliable information, the task becomes the more difficult. In quest of the valuable information here for the first time brought together in one volume, the author has been compelled to travel an unbeaten path. For the data the old libraries of Europe and America have been searched. Years have been spent collecting, arranging and simplifying this material so as to place it within the comprehension of the ordinary reader, and now this volume is given to the public in a form that must commend itself to the judgment of every student of modern church history. Though made up of facts relating wholly to the experiences and incidents of past generations, its style is such as to render it as interesting and fascinating as a romance. This feature of the book we think will be pleasing to all classes of readers. Concerning the competency of Brother Brumbaugh to produce a volume of such rare qualities, one has only to glance at his busy life. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections Relating to the American Colonial Church in Virginia: A. D. 1650 1776 Little need be said to preface die important and interesting papers comprised in this volume. While they are far from presenting an exhaustive, or even a connected history of the Church in the Old Dominion during the period to which they belong, they furnish the material from which that history is to be drawn. They offer the verba ipsissima of the men who gave their lives to the work of founding the Church in a new world, and though often betraying personal or party prejudices; though sometimes written with sinister ends in view; and from time to time displaying much that the historian would necessarily or willingly conceal, still these letters and papers must be examined and studied by those who would acquaint themselves with the story of the Churchs introduction into our land. From their unpremeditated allusions, their faithful representations of passing events, their jottings-down of matters of civil as well as ecclesiastical interest, they serve to solve many problems of the present day and furnish lessons of encouragement and warning alike to us who reap where these writers sowed.
