Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College, in American Life I have believed, and still believe, that through the securing of this double purpose the college may be able to be a richer blessing to this great life of which the college is a part, and which it is set to serve. No book of a kind such as this can make any pretence of being complete. This volume includes the consideration of only a few of the more vital questions. Other questions, quite as vital possibly, I hope to be able to discuss in other volumes. For the American college, like American life or the life of any progressive people, is full of infinite suggestions appealing to thought or to action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College But in this region the American college merges itself into the university, and it may be fairly asserted that in the last year and in some colleges in the last two years the student is really a university student. In these various ways we are to-day experimenting in order to find a form under which to organize the rapidly-increasing mass of elective studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College: A Series of Papers Setting Forth the Program, Achievements, Present Status, and Probable Future of the American College The chapters included in this volume comprise the papers read at a Conference on the American College held on the occasion of the celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the founding of Allegheny College. They were all specially pre pared for this particular event. In fact, the en tire programme of the conference was made out before anyone was asked to read a paper. Careful attention was given to selecting for a particular topic the man who could speak with authority on that topic. The book, therefore, is a new book, and presents the freshest and most comprehensive thought on the American college. Book Aggiornamento on the Hill of Janus

Download or read book Aggiornamento on the Hill of Janus written by Stephen Michael DiGiovanni and published by Midwest Theological Forum. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 14, 1953, Pope Pius XII presided over the dedication of the new Pontifical North American College seminary on the Janiculum Hill above Saint Peter’s Basilica. Nearly one hundred years had passed since the seminary’s founding, and the Pope considered the new campus’ completion “a stronger flame of hope for the Church in the United States of America and in the world.” Devotion to the Holy Father, the grace of priestly ordination, and a solid training in the Church’s teachings were the three treasures that young men trained at the “NAC” brought back with them to the United States as priests. In this follow-up to Father Robert McNamara’s monumental work, The American College in Rome, 1855–1955, Monsignor Stephen M. DiGiovanni advances the history of the College over the next quarter century. The American students in the 1950s were not the same as those who had lived in the old seminary during the previous century. The world was very different after numerous revolutions, social upheavals, and two world wars. Other forces were at work as well, including some changes just beginning to take place in American society, which would become radically and publicly manifest on American university and seminary campuses during the next decades—even in Rome. If prior to the Second Vatican Council everything was clear and regimented, then during and after the Council less and less was clear-cut or well-defined on the “Hill of Janus.” In fact, few could have predicted the aggiornamento or “updating” that was on the horizon that would profoundly reshape, for better or worse, the NAC and its future priests.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteen Years in the Church of Rome To Henry Norwell, Esq., - It is with great satisfaction that I mention your name the first among the many to whom I dedicate this book. I owe this to you as a token of gratitude for the help and kindness which more than once I received at your hands, years ago when a stranger in the city of Boston. And the respect and esteem I entertain for you will plead my apology for venturing to dedicate to you this earnest, honest, and it is hoped not unsuccessful, attempt to vindicate the true Church from all alliance or identity with the Roman system. To the Freemasons, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Knights of Pythias, of the United States of America, I dedicate this book, also.
