This book was released on 2007 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dead woman found floating in the hot tub of an expensive vacation home rocks the tranquility of a Puget Sound island community. For the young couple who discovers the body it shatters their Valentine's Day love tryst and turns their lives upside down. Aaron Klein finds himself accused of the murder. Tami Stillwell is haunted by memories of a death in Texas four years before that was eerily similar. For Scottish forensic pathologist, Donald McLure, the death means an interruption to a quiet Sunday at home with his family. When the owner of the hot tub turns out to be Donald's former girlfriend from his days at Edinburgh University the case takes on a new complexion. Rebuilding his own life after his wife walked out on him Donald gets caught between a sense of duty to help out an old friend and a desire to impress the attractive young homicide detective in charge of the case. The investigation turns up unexpected connections to the past, connections that other people are eager to cover up at all costs. Donald encounters hostility and deceit as he stumbles onto secrets that challenge his assumptions and threaten his job and his life From the politics and sophistication of Seattle society to the caves, forests and waterfalls of the Olympic wilderness The Desolation Falls Mystery is the second adventure involving Scottish forensic pathologist Donald McLure. Naïve and vulnerable in personal matters, his dry observations let the reader view the rich sweep of life in the Pacific Northwest through fresh eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of the American Civil War’s first campaign in Virginia in 1862. The first campaign in the Civil War in which Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia, the Seven Days Battles were fought southeast of the Confederate capital of Richmond in the summer of 1862. Lee and his fellow officers, including “Stonewall” Jackson, James Longstreet, A. P. Hill, and D. H. Hill, pushed George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac from the gates of Richmond to the James River, where the Union forces reached safety. Along the way, Lee lost several opportunities to harm McClellan. The Seven Days have been the subject of numerous historical treatments, but none more detailed and engaging than Brian K. Burton’s retelling of the campaign that lifted Southern spirits, began Lee’s ascent to fame, and almost prompted European recognition of the Confederacy. “A thoroughly researched and well-written volume that will surely be the starting point for those interested in this particular campaign.” —Journal of American History “A welcome addition to scholarship that should be the standard work on its subject for some time to come.” —Journal of Military History “Plenty of good maps . . . help the reader follow the course of the campaign. . . . Burton does not neglect the role of the common soldiers . . . [and]provides thorough and reasonable analyses of the commanders on both sides.” —Georgia Historical Quarterly “A full and measured account marked by a clear narrative and an interesting strategy of alternating the testimony of generals with their grand plans and the foot soldiers who had to move, shoot, and communicate in the smokey underbrush.” —The Virginia Magazine

Download or read book Across the Bloody Chasm written by M. Keith Harris and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long after the Civil War ended, one conflict raged on: the battle to define and shape the war's legacy. Across the Bloody Chasm deftly examines Civil War veterans' commemorative efforts and the concomitant -- and sometimes conflicting -- movement for reconciliation. Though former soldiers from both sides of the war celebrated the history and values of the newly reunited America, a deep divide remained between people in the North and South as to how the country's past should be remembered and the nation's ideals honored. Union soldiers could not forget that their southern counterparts had taken up arms against them, while Confederates maintained that the principles of states' rights and freedom from tyranny aligned with the beliefs and intentions of the founding fathers. Confederate soldiers also challenged northern claims of a moral victory, insisting that slavery had not been the cause of the war, and ferociously resisting the imposition of postwar racial policies. M. Keith Har-ris argues that although veterans remained committed to reconciliation, the sectional sensibilities that influenced the memory of the war left the North and South far from a meaningful accord. Harris's masterful analysis of veteran memory assesses the ideological commitments of a generation of former soldiers, weaving their stories into the larger narrative of the process of national reunification. Through regimental histories, speeches at veterans' gatherings, monument dedications, and war narratives, Harris uncovers how veterans from both sides kept the deadliest war in American history alive in memory at a time when the nation seemed determined to move beyond conflict.
