Book St Philip s Church of Charleston

Download or read book St Philip s Church of Charleston written by Dorothy Middleton Anderson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Philip's Church was commissioned shortly after the Carolina colony was founded in 1670. Because the Church of England was the established church, St. Philip's tried to meet the spiritual needs of the early settlers and also was responsible for oversight of elections, education and social services in everything from healthcare to disaster relief. St. Philip's churchwardens and vestry enforced morality laws and levied taxes. The colony's first state funeral--that of Governor Robert Johnson--took place in the church, as did that of the controversial, one-time vice president, Senator John C. Calhoun. Buried in the churchyard are Founding Fathers, pirate hunters, war heroes, statesmen and even the unfortunate victim of a sensational murder. This book recounts the early years of St. Philip's Church, the people who walked its aisles and some of the early religious conflicts that shook the community. Authors Dorothy Middleton Anderson and Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman outline the fascinating history of the first church in the new colony.

Book The Life of St Philip Neri

Download or read book The Life of St Philip Neri written by Antonio Gallonio and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Philip Neri is one of the best-loved saints of all time. Known as the ಘApostle of Rome', he set in motion a great renewal of Christianity at the heart of the Church's capital city during the 1500's. St. Philip's foundation of the Oratory began by stimulating young laymen to conversion, prayer, and apostolic works, and through them gradually brought about a reform of the entire Church, at all levels of society. St. Philip inspired many through his words, his miracles and his spiritual gifts, which show many similarities with other great saints such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney. This account of Philip's life, written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death, captures well his holy zeal for God's work in the face of a corrupt and decadent Rome; his great sense of humor, which he would often use to remind people of hidden spiritual realities; and the many extraordinary miracles and conversions wrought by St. Philip both during his lifetime and after his death. This is the first ever English translation of the affectionate biography, published originally in Latin in the Jubilee Year 1600. Unusually for the time, it was written in chronological order; it also bears the original footnotes by Gallonio, in which he refers to eyewitnesses and makes comparisons with the lives of canonized saints, intending thereby to assist in the promotion of Philip's cause for elevation to the altars. Additional notes and a comprehensive index make this a most interesting and useful book for devotees of St. Philip, as well as a very readable introduction to the saint for those who do not yet know him.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Philip's Episcopal Church: A History; Brevard, North Carolina Now I think we had better take this Opportunity and sell the building and devote the proceeds to fencing in the land and protecting it for a cemetery as was planned long ago. Please send me the proper authority to sell and we can then determine what is best to be done with the proceeds in case the Trustees of the Jurisdiction (missionary Jurisdiction of Asheville) do not approve of fencing the land. I would rather not have this matter discussed here as some of the old ladies in the Parish are fond of interfering and in matters of business, I think the least said the better. As the Treasurer of the Parish I presume I am the proper one to attend to these matters. Mr. Rooney has not yet grasped the situation here so I have not troubled him with the details as here set out. Have merely told him that I was going to dispose of it if possible. As I understand, the building was never consecrated as it was intended for uses as a school, as well as church building. [the building was consecrated April 28, The price will be determined by a competent and honest carpenter and builder.
