Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Patrick's Cathedral In 1785 there were in this city but two hundred Catholics under one priest. They were Irish and French, German and Italian, Spanish and Scotch, Eng lish and Portuguese, few in number, poor in resources, divided by racial differences, but united by love of their adopted country, of its political ideals, above all, by love of their Church. At their express wish, the first Catholic temple in this city was dedicated to the Prince of the Apostles. They established the church of New York on the Rock, and nowhere are the foundations of Catholicity more solidly laid than in this Metropoli tan See. They also have the honor of opening the first free school in the State six years before any public school was started. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Patrick's Church, Carlisle, Pennsylvania The divine commission, Go teach all nations, has been one to which the Catholic Church has ever been true and faithful one woven like a tissue of gold in her nineteen centuried history; one inseparably connected with the divinity of her organization and existence. After the pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit, she entered upon her stupendous mission with marks and prerogatives in which the whole human family from the uncultured Lombard and Goth to the erudite Greek and Roman, dis cerned the presence of gifts which belong to the super natural order and of graces which connect her by an almost visible bond with the unseen world. These gifts and graces, as history records, have been her inheritance, not only in apostolic ages, but are poured out as lavishly in our own generation as in any that preceded it. It is by this token, and not by numerical success, that we recog nize the apostolic commission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charge Delivered at His Primary Visitation: In St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, on Thursday the 24th of October, 1822 To address the assembly which now surrounds me for the first time, upon objects so important as those for which it is convened, and which press with not a greater weight of responsibility on the members of this assembly than upon him by whom they are addressed, must be, at all seasons, a matter of serious and awful consideration. But, at the present, when the Established Clergy of this Land are beset with difficulties and perils of more than common magnitude; when, not only the interests of our order, but those of religion itself are endangered; when, from the abounding of iniquity, the love of many has waxed cold; when more than usual hostility prevails against our Zion; and even our very good is too ten evil spoken of; - it is impossible to enter upon the reflections, which belong to the nature and occasion of our meeting, without feelings of anxious and painful solicitude. Book St Patrick s Cathedral Dublin

Download or read book St Patrick s Cathedral Dublin written by John Crawford and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dublin is an unusual city in having two Anglican cathedrals within a few hundred yards of each other, St Patricks cathedral and the diocesan cathedral of Christ Church. This volume chronicles the history of St Patricks cathedral over the millennium of its existence, the first work to do so for almost two hundred years. It charts the impact of events such as the Reformation in the sixteenth century and disestablishment in the nineteenth century as well as chronicling the evolution of a local community through the architecture of the cathedrals buildings and the music of its worship. As such the book casts into relief not only the life of the church but also the workings of the city and the country as a whole through their turbulent histories.--from publisher description.

Book Saint Patrick and the Early Church of Ireland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saint Patrick and the Early Church of Ireland Classic Reprint written by Wm M. Blackburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland Was there ever such a man as Saint Patrick? It was wise to consider this question before attempting to write his life. By some it has been doubted, by a few others denied. But in such cases there has usually been a strong party feeling, or an ignorance of certain original sources of history. There is a distinction to be made between the myth and the man. Imagination has given us a Robinson Crusoe; the real man was Alexander Selkirk. The Saint Patrick of the ordinary Irish heart is certainly very mythical. The portrait of him was drawn from imagination; the colours are not those of the fifth, but those of the twelfth or fourteenth century. The deeds are manufactured to order and by the job, and the life is made of the baldest legends. This Patrick is a fully-developed Papist of the time, when certain errors pre vailed, which he could not have known in the fifth century. He is constantly working miracles, some of them very trifling, and some of them astounding, beyond all that was ever recorded of a mere man. For his especial benefit divine revelations are made to him, which cause a greater amazement than any ever made to Moses or Paul. He is too wonderful to be real. The myth business was entirely overdone. The manufacturers did not perceive that com mon sense might some time be restored to the human race. In the Middle Ages it was customary with the monks to exercise their scholars in writing the lives of imaginary saints; asserting that it was a pious and very improving way of exercising the imagination! L The best of these fanciful biographies were laid aside for future use; and after the lapse of a few ages, when their statements could not be disproved, were produced and published as genuine.
