Download or read book Salt Lake City 1890 1930 written by Gary Topping and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1930, Salt Lake City experienced some of the most rapid and profound changes of any city in U.S. history. In its pioneer period, from the beginning of white settlement in 1847 to about 1890, the city struggled against outside pressures to maintain its identity as a self-sufficient Mormon utopian community, with its theocratic government, agricultural economy, and polygamous society. But by the turn of the 20th century, Mormonism had largely abandoned those features, and Salt Lake City was becoming like most other American cities as it embraced capitalism, the evolution of transportation and industry, ethnic and cultural diversity, women's rights, and modern entertainment.

Book Salt Lake City s Historic Architecture

Download or read book Salt Lake City s Historic Architecture written by Allen D. Roberts and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settling in an isolated desert valley, Salt Lake City's Mormon pioneers laid out a city grid and constructed permanent structures to create their version of Zion. They brought with them their architects, builders, tools, and experience gained in the Midwest. Within a decade, the fast-growing community had created religious, business, and residential centers with Greek- and Gothic Revival-style structures built of stone and adobe. With the arrival of the railroad, urban architects, and a sizable "gentile" (non-Mormon) population in the 1860s, the city's architecture suddenly diversified in scale, style, and material. By the 1890s, virtually every American style was represented and impressive landmarks were found citywide. This trend continued throughout the early 20th century as talented architects designed in a rich variety of architectural expressions. Although several important buildings are lost, many remain and are now restored. In this book, Salt Lake City's legacy of historic governmental, religious, commercial, industrial, educational, social, and residential architecture--from 1850 through 1930--is pictured and described.

Book The Gathering Place

Download or read book The Gathering Place written by John S. McCormick and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salt Lake City is no ordinary place. Its "hard-gutted individuality", as Western historian Dale L. Morgan called it, gives it a "contradictory charm". The city has an extraordinary and complicated past, full of paradoxes and irresolution about its image. This is the story of a frontier outpost, founded as a haven for religious refugees, that eventually becomes a melting pot for different kinds of people -- different voices, experiences, points of view, traditions, values, and ways of life. In fact, the city has emerged from the crucible of conflict, based partly on religion but also on race, class distinction, and gender. The author's goal in his thought-provoking overview, accented by 125 historical photographs, is not to shift from the "feel good" emphasis of traditional photo-histories but to augment that approach with information about societal change, a history of groups and traditions and of the ideas and experiences that have made the city what it is today.

Book The History of Emigration Canyon Gateway to Salt Lake Valley

Download or read book The History of Emigration Canyon Gateway to Salt Lake Valley written by Cynthia Furse and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emigration Canyon is well known in Utah as the route by which pioneers, in 1847, reached Great Salt Lake Valley to establish the state's first lasting Euro-American settlements. Before and after 1847 the canyon had an interesting history, which included the Donner-Reed party, the Pony Express and Overland Stage, mining and sheep herding, a narrow-gauge railroad, a major resort, a brewery, and the transformation of recreation areas and cabin sites into year-round residential neighborhoods. This well-illustrated, detailed history tells the story of a unique place, but its counterparts can be found across the West and America wherever the development of wild and scenic areas has been shaped by the growth and needs of neighboring cities. In this second edition, new illustrations and maps, new information and stories, a significantly expanded chapter on the Emigration Canyon Railroad, and a new chapter on the modern history, bring to life the story of a place and its people.

Book South Temple Street Landmarks

Download or read book South Temple Street Landmarks written by Bim Oliver and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest days of settlement, South Temple was Salt Lake's most prestigious street. In 1857, William Staines built the Devereaux House, Salt Lake's first of many mansions. The once-bustling Union Pacific Depot eventually found itself increasingly isolated. Downtown's "gleaming copper landmark" overcame numerous hurdles before its construction was finally finished, and the Steiner American Building helped usher in acceptance of Modernist architecture. Evolving to reflect its continued prominence, in 1975, the thoroughfare's core became the city's first local historic district, and in 1982, it made the National Register of Historic Places. Author and historian Bim Oliver celebrates the changing landmarks along these famous eighteen blocks.
