Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Pittsburgh and Environs, Vol. 2 The commander of Fort Pitt in March, 1779, was Colonel Daniel Brodhead. Washington projected an expedition under Brodhead's com mand to cooperate with General Sullivan in an attack on Fort Niagara, but the project was afterwards abandoned, and though Brodhead marched his forces up the Allegheny river as far as Warren, in icting much damage upon the Indians, he accomplished nothing more and returned to Fort Pitt without loss. Brodhead was a man full of projects - one was an expedition down the Ohio and Mississippi against Natchez, another against Detroit, but Washington put a veto on both. This inac tion galled Brodhead, and he gave full token of his restless spirit. Owing to the scarcity of provisions, he found fault with the quartermasters, one of whom was Colonel Ephraim Blaine, grandfather of James G. Blaine, therefore it was not surprising he became involved in an angry contro versy with some of his officers. The latest extended history of Pittsburgh was published in 1898, which was just at the beginning of the wave of prosperity which, in the course of a score of years, has placed it among the greater cities on the continent, and well to the front among cities of the world, as cities go, and far in the lead as a manufacturing and financial center. This has made a revision and extension of its history necessary. Fortunately we have with us a historian, to the manner born, in George T. Fleming, who is still actively and persistently engaged in local historical research, as shown in the columns of the Sunday Gazette Times, as well as in his wonderful collection of pictures and other data relating to the growth and development of the city. The selection of Mr. Fleming to prepare this latest history of Pitts burgh, and the region round about, was most fortunate for the city as well as for the publishers. He is not only a sturdy grubber after facts but has the ability to dress them up in pleasing style and set them in graceful order. It is the desire, as well as the purpose of the editor and publishers of this history, that it shall be valuable not only as a narrative of historic events, but as a compendium of facts relating to men and matters, events and happenings pertaining to the triumphant growth of Pittsburgh, its institutions, and its fame. Necessarily it will be somewhat encyclopedic, but space limits compel this. And yet it is, probably, the more fitting form, as it will facilitate the finding of whatsoever data that may be de sired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Pittsburgh and Environs, Vol. 3 Agriculture was at once subordinated to new conditions in the pro duction of smaller crops which were necessary at very fair returns for the subsistence of the local population. Pittsburgh had another ad vantage; that was the circumstance that most of those enroute to the West and South assembled in their town to take passage to their several landing places in the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, which gave them time to take stock of the various resources of the town. These settlers soon found that many of the essentials for their new homes and farms, as well as the little factories that some of them intended building, were to be had at much more reasonable prices than in any of the eastern markets, and were ready to take with them on their trips to their new homes. This fact was speedily apparent to the Pittsburgh manufacturer and tradesman of whatever nature, and production was hurried in every line. Letters from those who had bought from Pittsburgh producers to those in the East who contemplated joining them in the West and South, notifying them of the advantages of buying in Pittsburgh es pecially in the matter of convenience, both in prices and quick ship ments, multiplied their customers and expanded the area of sales greatly very early in the history of local manufacturing. Gradually, too, the boating facilities began to improve, which gave these manufacturers great advantages over eastern competitors which they were quick to see and just as quick to take care of. Manufacturing had struck its stride and Pittsburgh had discovered its destiny. Other cities, east and west, north and south, have vainly imagined that the finger of this destiny has pointed at them, indeed, they have risen in this illusion to be putative rivals of the iron-steel-coal-electric-city, but each in turn has become conscious of the illusion and adapted itself to conditions indicated. Transportation in those days was of the most elementary nature and was carried on in every direction under the most expensive conditions, but this subject is fully treated in another chapter. With the chief facts of the early history of Pittsburgh, especially with those that center around Fort Duquesne, most readers of Pennsylvania history are fairly familiar. The story of these early days lose nothing in Miss Killikelly's retelling. Very marvelous, indeed, has been the growth of this great Pennsylvania city. A record of its population in 1761 gives the number of men as 324, the women 92 and children 47, living outside the garrison; the number of houses with owners' names was 220. At this period the town was divided into a Lower and Upper Town; the "King's Gardens" stretching along the Allegheny, with a background of wheatfields. The residence of the commandant, a substantial brick building within the fort, was the most pretentious house. In 1815 the population had increased to nearly 10,000. The subsequent history of this city is too detailed to be summarized. Miss Killikelly tells the story in ample manner, yet without any overloading of unessential facts. Her pages throb with the active, busy life that has made Pittsburgh so pre-eminently a manufacturing center, and she tells the story of its commercial, industrial and cultural progress with the skill of a practiced writer. Pittsburgh is probably the most misunderstood city in the United States, and Miss Killikelly is entitled to cordial thanks for her entirely readable account.
