Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Penobscot County, Maine: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches The widely open mouth attracted the attention of all the exploring navigators sailing along the coast and it was visited by the Spaniards. On their first exploring expedition to our regions. We see it depicted -on the Spanish maps as the longest river of the whole region, and they gave to it names like the following: Rio Grande (the great river), or Rio Hermoso (the beautiful river). And the principal of the ear ly Spanish explorers of these regions, Gomez, left his name to this river, which, perhaps, he considered to be one iof his most important discoveries. It was sometimes called Rio de Gomez (the river of Gomez). It was afterwards often visited by French navigators and fishermen from the Great Bank, and they appear to have built there, before the year 1555, a fort or settlement, which must have been the first European settlement ever made on the coast of Maine. The In dians of Maine, also, thought highly of this river. Their principal chief, according to the well-known Captain John Smith, an early Eng lish describer of the coast of Maine, resided on its shore, and even now when everywhere else in Maine the Indians have disappeared, the few remnants of them, the little Penobscot tribe, cling to the borders of this their old, beloved, principal canoe trail. The very full and interesting Report upon the Water power of Maine, made in 1868 by Mr. Walter Wells, superintendent of the hydrogr'aphical survey of this State, contains an elaborate and most valuable chapter upon the system of the Penobscot, from which we make the following brief extracts. Book History of York County Maine

Download or read book History of York County Maine written by W. Woodford Clayton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of York County, Maine: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers James Rosier, an English gentleman, who accompanied Capt. Weymouth as chroniolcr, wrote a Mug account of the newly-discovered country in 1605, but omitted all names and observations of latitude and longitude. In order, it is said, to prevent navigators of other nations from seeking theaamespot. The consequence has been that the river has been gossed to bethe Hudaon, thedamcs, th08sco, and, more recently, the l'enobacot, the Kenncbee, and the arm of the sea north of Monhegan, running up to South Thomaston, and known as the St. George's. Capt. C mouth also discovered the fishing-hanks, which are still known as the George's banks; and although his name has fiiled to displace the old Indian name of Monhegsn, there has been a strong presumption that the nameless river which he found might still wur, like the banks, the name of his patron saint. Dr. Belknap, the historian of New Hampshire, however, conjectured that cmoutb had ascended the Penobscot River, and this opinion was gener ally followed until the late John mckceu, of Brunswick, suggested that Bosier's description better fitted the Kenne beo, and a few years later Kev. David Cushman, of Warren, contended that the St. George's River was intended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Review, 1896: This Volume Contains Biographical Sketches of Leading Citizens of Cumberland County, Maine Possessing by inheritance British pluck and Quaker patience and persistency, physical and mental vigor, Neal Dow was providentially prepared to be a leader in a great reform. His boyhood presaged the man. He was educated in the town schools and in the Portland Acad emy and at the Friends' Academy in New Bed ford, Mass. In the latter school among others he had for a classmate the late Moses H. Grin nell, of New York; while in the Portland Acad emy among his school-fellows was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He was fitted for college; but, because of the prejudices which then generally prevailed among the Friends against it, his parents would not permit him to pursue a collegiate course of study. His love for reading was never abated, and books have been his closest companions through his life. He was far from a recluse, however, and in his youth entered with ardor into all the athletic sports of the period. Twice it has been his good fortune to turn his skill and strength as a swimmer to account in the saving of life.
