Book The Journal of John Winthrop 1630 1649

Download or read book The Journal of John Winthrop 1630 1649 written by John Winthrop and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This abridged edition of Winthrop's journal, which incorporates about 40 percent of the governor's text, with his spelling and punctuation modernized, includes a lively Introduction and complete annotation. It also includes Winthrop's famous lay sermon, "A Model of Christian Charity", written in 1630. As in the fuller journal, this abridged edition contains the drama of Winthrop's life - his defeat at the hands of the freemen for governor, the banishment and flight of Roger Williams to Rhode Island, the Pequot War that exterminated his Indian opponents, and the Antinomian controversy. Here is the earliest American document on the perpetual contest between the forces of good and evil in the wilderness - Winthrop's recounting of how God's Chosen People escaped from captivity into the promised land. While he recorded all the sexual scandal - rape, fornication, adultery, sodomy, and buggery - it was only to show that even in Godly New England the Devil was continually at work, and man must be forever militant.

Book A Landscape History of New England

Download or read book A Landscape History of New England written by Blake A. Harrison and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a view of New England's landscapes that goes beyond picture postcard-ready vistas of white-steepled churches, open pastures, and tree-covered mountains. Its chapters describe, for example, the Native American presence in the Maine Woods; offer a history of agriculture told through stone walls, woodlands, and farm buildings; report on the fragile ecology of tourist-friendly Cape Cod beaches; and reveal the ethnic stereotypes informing Colonial Revivalism. Taken together, they offer a wide-ranging history of New England's diverse landscapes, stretching across two centuries. The book shows that all New England landscapes are the products of human agency as well as nature. The authors trace the roles that work, recreation, historic preservation, conservation, and environmentalism have played in shaping the region, and they highlight the diversity of historical actors who have transformed both its meaning and its physical form. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, including history, geography, environmental studies, literature, art history, and historic preservation, the book provides fresh perspectives on New England's many landscapes: forests, mountains, farms, coasts, industrial areas, villages, towns, and cities. Illustrated, and with many archival photographs, it offers readers a solid historical foundation for understanding the great variety of places that make up New England.

Book Economic and Social History of New England Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Economic and Social History of New England Vol 1 of 2 written by William B. Weeden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic and Social History of New England, Vol. 1 of 2: 1620-1789 In these pages I have gathered some of the facts in the story of New England life. It is not an exhaustive collection, but it is hoped sufficient material has been secured to show in part what that life has stood for. Considerable independent investigation has been made in the Archives of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Con necticut, and also in their respective Probate Records. Manuscripts and stray papers in the American Antiqua rian Society, New England Historical and Genealogical Society, Rhode Island Historical Society, and elsewhere, have yielded good results. The family papers of the late Thomas C. Amory, Esq., show the commerce of their pe riod. Newspapers in possession of the Massachusetts His torical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society, afiord many glimpses of the condition of the eighteenth century. Much material of similar import has been drawn from the earlier local histories, and more recent publications of town records. The old-fashioned town histories are mines of crude historical ore, while the ao tual records of the early time, now being reproduced, are invaluable. A tabulated list of prices will be found under Appendix A. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of New England Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book History of New England Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gorham Palfrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New England, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Revolution of the Seventeenth Century, to the Revolution of the Eighteenth The administration of the controlling colonies of New Eng land illustrates the power, wisdom, and virtue that may reside in a society of undistinguished men. Sometimes, though not often, those to whom this people gave their confidence proved untrustworthy, and sought and used office for selfish ends; but the popular manhood generally defeated them. It was not to the agency of leaders that the progress of New England was mainly due, nor did that community furnish many such persons for commemoration in biographies. It was the popular good principles and good sense transmitted from parent to son which brought the excellent results to pass. Book A History of New England Volume 1

Download or read book A History of New England Volume 1 written by Isaac Backus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A historian who has been an actor in the events which he narrates, has peculiar advantages and disadvantages. He can write with more minuteness of detail, and with a fresher and more life-like coloring. He can write with more confidence, and, drawing from his own experience and observation, is in this respect more trustworthy. On the other hand, he is more liable to be warped by prejudice, to see only the excellences and none of the defects of those with whom he has been identified, and only the defects and none of the excellences of those to whom he has been opposed, to be a partizan rather than a judge, and to make his narration little more than the reflection of his personal opinions or his personal sympathy and affection, hostility and spite. "The Church History of Isaac Backus has all the above-named excellences. To a large extent he was an eye-witness of that which he describes; and where not an eye-witness, he placed himself in closest possible connection with it by personal acquaintance with the actors, and by immediate and most diligent and thorough examination of records and other evidence. While it may be too much to say that he absolutely avoided the defects above named, yet his sound judgment, his natural candor and honesty and his elevated Christian principle, have made him as nearly free from them as perhaps any author who has written in similar circumstances." --from the Editor's Preface

Book History of New England Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book History of New England Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gorham Palfrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New England, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Revolution of the Seventeenth Century, to the Revolution of the Eighteenth I had just made arrangements for putting into type a continuation of my History of New England, intending, as the work proceeded, to make additions to the text as it had been composed, and to adjust and amplify the body of notes of which I had a rough draught, when, in November, 1873, I was arrested by illness. When I regained some strength, the question occurred, whether I should attempt a prosecution of my plan under the disadvantages which would attend it. Should I do so, I must expect to fall short of the ideal which I had proposed to myself, and be content to produce what would not bear a rigorous criticism. But I decided that these considerations should not deter me, because materials which I had been long collecting, and which remained in a state unfit for any use but my own, would then be lost. As long as I should be able to apply myself to the task, I might hope to be putting into shape what would serve the convenience of future students, however it might be found to fail in completeness and even in accuracy. The history of New England is considered to be dry and unpicturesque. But by peculiar titles it deserves, beyond the records of dynastic intrigues and wars, to be known to the philosophical student of man and society, of divine Providence, and of the progress of the race.
